The Apothecary Diaries #19 — Golden Cow Balls

You'd think it'd be the testicles, not the gallstones.

Impressions:

For being a big reveal episode, it's still as unsatisfying to me as most of the others in this show have been, and for largely the same reasons. Everybody is curious about some mystery, wonders if there's some connection, and only Maomao Xiaomao has the attention span of 60 seconds to bother thinking any further than that. It doesn't make her look like a genius, or that she had some kind of epiphany, just that everybody else comes off as willfully oblivious. Maybe she needs a Watson or something to make her look better, because the internal monologues weren't cutting it.

The direction and script weren't helping either, doing the whole "I have no time to explain anything to anybody, but I absolutely do have time to have a long monologue to myself about how I have no time while glaring at this random guard, telling him that I have no time, and then calling him a dick." I'm not saying you deserved to be maced in the face, but it's far from an unexpected outcome here. The whole second half was in full Milk-The-Hell-Out-Of-Poor-Noble-Maomao, particularly the multiple minutes long weepy insert song carry scene at the end, also undermined by daddy showing up out of nowhere to save her bacon. Could've had her put aside her hatred for him to get his help, and that would've been at least some character development for one or both of them, but the monologues have no room for that, and it might've meant 30 seconds less time listening to a mournful dude's soulful wailing instead of getting some needed medical attention. We're not even going to staunch the wound, call for a doctor, or anybody investigate the collapsing building? Okay. Sure. Wouldn't want to interrupt your insert song.
