A Certain Whiny Microwave #22 — Feared by Soggy Toast Everywhere

March 5th, 2010

I can feel my eyebrow twitching in annoyance.

Impressions:

Good god. The bad writing in this episode rivaled Kiddy Girl’s. First there’s the casual bit where Uiharu reveals that her power is to warm things. Great. You have a promising career as a space heater somewhere. Then Mikoto decides that nobody will be able to tell that it’s her breaking in because she’s wearing a frog mask… and immediately starts throwing electricity around… and takes off the mask five seconds later. "So, the perp’s a 15 year old girl, highly powerful electric esper… not wearing a mask… whoever could it be?" Then, in the middle of the facility, she sets off every alarm in the place, yet is still able to just wander out with Kiyama without any issues. A place like that doesn’t have any security guards? Or those trashcan robots? I miss those trashcan robots. They had a cooler power than being a microwave. They were trashcan robots.

So, to the surprise of nobody the Child Errors and some other random level 6 experiment are the cause of the earthquakes, but nobody can really do anything about their power going berserk, and since this is so important, in the true spirit of the worst parts of Index, they spend about half the episode explaining that before hauling off all the kids off to create SUPER DRAMA for Harue and her trusty microwave companion. If this were Index, I would imagine that it’s because some vampire mage wants to consume their orphan souls in order to… I don’t know… revive Set or something. Since this is Railgun, I imagine it’s because somebody’s unhappy with their cell phone reception and is looking for a new level 6 carrier network. I cannot wait for them to save the day thanks to Uiharu’s ability to warm up taiyaki the villain’s icy heart with a fiery island song.

Preview:

Oh no, the microwave broke down.

  • Anise Punter says:

No, Aroduc; we’re supposed to freeze his hot heart with a COOL island song. How could you get that wrong?

Seriously though, reading your posts has been more fun than watching the episodes for almost half the series now; I don’t think that’s what they intended.

  • Vegetarian4Life says:

Admittedly, the filler arcs were more enjoyable to watch. The characters and the way they act seem to fit better with filler than with real plots. They really are just a bunch of kids.

  • Nazarielle says:

I want to pick Railgun up again, for all the wrong reasons.

I read the manga, and this is a total rape of it…
First the facility Misaka broke should be where she finds out about the sister project and the sister are being used to help Accelerator reach level 6 by killing the sister wasn’t this already known in the Index anime ?
    my head hurts.
