Penguin Girl ♥ #02 — Xia Ci, Tadaimadachi!

Dachidachidachidachidachi!

Impressions:

I actually enjoyed this episode quite a bit, and not just because action comedies are my favorite genre. I didn’t expect Kujira to have a martial arts past at all, but it’s a fun and wacky thing to place against Pengy’s (which is so much easier to write than Nankyoku) expectation of all things shounen. Xia Ci… Eh… I like the fang. I like the energy. I like her insistence that Kujira is a man. A manly man. A manly man’s man. Her voice is even alright. Along with her panty flashtastic chinese dress brings to mind Kurodberi Jam. Her habit of ending her sentences with ‘dachi’ drives me up the wall though. Good lord is that irritating as sin. Still, fangy girls are awesome. She’ll never be the gold standard that is Lina Inverse, but then again, nobody can be. I’m satisfied just having a fangy girl ready to pick a fight at a moment’s notice.

Pengy is also growing on me quite a bit. She wasn’t really toned down this episode, but she makes a very entertaining support character, always ready to jump in and break the 4th wall in order to echo exactly what the audience is thinking. Her fantasies are predictably amusing as well. Nothing that really made me laugh, but plenty of chuckles. She’s also good for abuse. I had a good laugh as the room was exploding from Kujira’s punch and one of the random craters that got created was smack dab in the middle of her face. Fun times dachi.

OP #2

Kujira is thrown out of a dojo and sent on her way. The master, her father, tells her to not come back until she’s a man. But… she’s a girl. FOOLISHNESS. Until she becomes a man, she’s not allowed home.

Apparently the Etorofu family were expecting her to be a guy, so they raised her as such… subject to all the harsh martial arts training and what-have-you. Pengy fantasizes about a manly Kujira. She understands and will keep Kujira’s spirit.

Kujira defuses her and says that everythings fine. She just wanted to be a cute girl. In that case, Pengy will help her. Kujira gets fired up and will defeat all those that stand in her way.

A girl in a chinese dress smirks outside the school.

Some time later, the girls have Kujira dressed up in a boy’s outfit. After all, this is the way that makes her look the cutest and best. Pengy isn’t about to relent on the point, even though Kujira disagrees.

Suddenly there’s an explosion and fangy chinese girl leaps off Pengy’s face. She laughs and then challenges Kujira. She also ends every sentence with ‘dachi.’ It’s immensely annoying. Kujira recognizes her… Xia Ci. She’s from a rival dojo. XIA CI DACHI! God, that’s irritating. Xia rushes to attack, saying it’s revenge for 8 years ago.

Kujira flashes back to sparring with Xia 8 years ago. Kujira won the fight, but Xia vowed revenge. Kujira just smiled and said that she wouldn’t lose and would keep getting stronger too. Then… it’s a promise! Really dachika!?

Kujira remembers it in the present. Xia jumps backwards, and before Kujira can explain, starts spinning, creating a huge tornado. Kujira tries to back up, but is at the edge of the desk. Xia takes advantage of the opening and boots Kujira upside the face. Kujira falls to the ground.

XIA NO KATSUCHI!?

However, Xia looks down on the fallen Kujira and blushes. She was always thinking about winning, and thought that they’d become lovers. After all, Kujira’s father set her and Xia up to be married. Except then Xia fell in love with her nurse as she was recovering from being trounced by her father. At some point, Pengy’s imagination took over this story and it spiralled out of control.

Kujira smacks some sense into her, but Pengy tries to quote mountains of manga as the source. Kujira’s ready for a real fight now.

Xia and her face off for real this time. Xia is still yelling about Kujira being a guy the whole while. The two charge at eachother and the massive blast from Kujira’s punch rips the clothes off Xia as well as laying waste to the classroom, including Pengy’s face.

Kujira helps Xia up and tries to explain that the promise 8 years ago…

She’s not a guy. Xia understands… well… no she doesn’t. She runs off, leaving only destruction behind.

The next day, there’s a rumor going around that they’ve got a new transfer student. From China. A real beauty. I WONDER WHERE THIS IS LEADING. She’s into sports too. Pengy is all over new transfer students.

Of course, it’s Xia Chi dechi. She’s happy to be in the same class as Kujira and ready to fulfill their promise.

Pengy steps in and tells her that she’s wrong. Xia calls her a strange woman and gets ready to attack until Kujira steps in. Of course, Pengy’s trying to steal Xia’s man. And the attack is on.

Pengy cowers behind Kujira, who easily blocks her kick.

THE BLOCK OF TRUE LOVE. Is that woman so important to Kujira? Xia runs off in tears as manly men Kujira and Pengy watch her go.
