Comiket 73: Sound Holic’s Touhou Sidestory Part #2

Take that, you crazy moon people.

Impressions:

Well, amateur certainly does a good job of describing this. Character movement is minimal to none through the whole thing and a rather excessive use of video filters seems to be the modus operandi. It’s still basically a character worship for the Eientei crew, especially Kaguya and Eirin. It just seems so very very underwhelming, especially with all the other amateur Touhou fanworks out there. Touhou Soccer especially has some absolutely amazing work in it that this just doesn’t ever come close to emulating. Maybe the comparison is unfair, but in comparison to the wealth of awesome animated Touhou stuff out there, this was extremely underwhelming all around and felt more like listening to a drama CD than an animated production. Without the filters rampantly attacking everything in sight, this would be basically just talking heads for an entire hour. There was a short sequence of Reisen and Sakuya using their attacks, but that lasted about 5 seconds and was the most animation that the entire thing had.

I don’t want to say much about the story because it’s more or less the drek you’d expect from fan work. Even for the Touhou universe, the whole alien invasion/space police thing is really bizarre. It does solidify my beliefs that if there ever is a Touhou anime, it needs to be handled by Shaft. At this point, the Touhou universe is more defined by fanworks than by Zun, and let’s face it… the Touhou universe is stylish and weird, which basically describes Shaft at this point as well.

Strange tangents aside, even if you’re a rabid Touhou fan, you can probably skip this without too many worries. It just reeks a little too much of letting a team of monkeys loose in the video editting room and then leaving on all the random stuff that they came up with.
