2012 Winter Premiere Week Wrapup and Toga Party
January 11th, 2012
A premiere week that’s only 7 days long? Madness.
There’s a limited amount of time in the day, and since I tend to watch things within an hour or two of airing instead of waiting half the day for such pleasantries as subtitles or things in resolutions larger than my laptop’s screen, I vastly prefer to watch things more or less with the broadcast schedule. Here’s the quick list of all the shows that premiered along with a short blurb designed to reduce a 24 minute episode to a quarter second bullet point. Extensive or indicative of the entire show? Hell no. Each one is linked to what could possibly be more comprehensive thoughts on it, or possibly a man getting hit in the groin with a football. The only shows left to air either don’t begin until February (Black Rock Shooter/PreCure), or are by a horrible studio on an already crowded day (Dog x Me SS tomorrow). Still, it feels like it’s been a year or two since there’s been an actual premiere week that only lasted approximately seven days. It feels so weird to still not have my mind settled about most while writing this.
And a friendly reminder, most shows are going to be bad, make no mistake about it, but even bad shows can be worth watching… or even more fun to write about than boringly average to decent shows. I think Guilty Crown has done an admirable job of showing that last season. 95% (or more!) of all media is crap, and that holds for current media as well as past.
Anything that I am 100% certain I’m going to cover for at least another week gets delicious cake, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stick with it past the next episode or two. Likewise, just because I’m not looking forward to something just yet doesn’t mean that I won’t pick it up. I tend to watch at least part of the second episode of most things, I just don’t write anything if I’ve lost all interest and turned it off after 5 minutes. If you’ve got any input, flames, or desperate begging, go wild.
MONDAY
Another
If this show tried any harder with less content, it’d be a parody. It’s already pretty damn close.
The Daily Lives of High School Boys
Even if I liked getting yelled at in place of a laugh track, I’ve already apparently dozed through half of the first 4 episodes.
That Rehash We Were Waiting For
It’s rare that something is literally recycled. Especially something so abysmal in the first place.
Natsume’s Neverending Book
This series’s ability to continue existing amazes me.
TUESDAY
Listen to What Your Father Says!!
This episode was a big load of absolutely nothing whatsoever.
WEDNESDAY
The New Prince of Tennis
It was so terrible, I didn’t even want to bother posting anything about it.
THURSDAY
1-900-HOT-GRRL
Given DVD prices, only marginally more expensive than an angry handy behind the Olive Garden.
Detective Opera Milky Holmes
Looking to seamlessly move right into more of the same off-beat slapstick as last season.
Guilty Crown
The writing in this show is so bad that it ended up the best comedy of last season. Now it has actual competition.
Kill Me Baby
It got the energy level mostly right, but needs to polish its jokes a little better. Still not bad though.
Persona 4
Well, it’s an adaptation. It could certainly be a lot better though, and a lot worse.
High School DxD
Wasn’t this supposed to be about boobs killing things? Why was it 24 minutes of a poorly animated loser whining?
FRIDAY
Shana F
This is about where season 2 turned decent. I don’t have too many of the same hopes here though.
Symphogear
One of the few things this season that understands what a hook is. Needs a little polishing, but definitely a decent start.
The Knight in the Area
90% bad sports cliches, 5% terrible animation, 5% juvenile humor.
Not-Shana F
Not a bad start, all things considered, aside from completely recycling the melodrama from an earlier season at least…
SATURDAY
Bodacious Space Pirates
Contains literally none of what was advertised and a whole lot of nothing in its place.
Brave 10
Stuff a gag in the girl’s mouth, make the animation above mediocre, give the characters personalities, then we’ll talk.
Close-ups Of Eyes 2
It’s funny because it’s eyes.
SUNDAY
Aquarion EVOL
Writing almost as inane as Guilty Crown, but with characters that might not be terrible? What madness is this?
Lagrange
It’s hard to tell if this was trying to be a mediocre comedy or mediocre mecha action. It was mediocre both.
Wrapup:
I can’t say it’s looking like a particularly strong season, but hopefully some shows will pick up a bit. First episodes this season felt a whole lot more underwhelming than usual though. There’s at least Milky Holmes and Guilty Crown heading up the comedies. I’d be a whole lot happier if I could spread some of the Thursday and Friday shows out to the great vast wastelands of Monday through Wednesday. I’ll probably end up watching DxD anyway just because it airs in the evenings when I can force people on IRC to watch it with me and laugh about how terrible it is. Otherwise… well… I guess we’ll see what distinguishes itself on the weekends.
Maybe it’ll give me a chance to figure out these bizarre 500 ISErrors that have been popping up lately. Now that sounds like ‘fun.’

So the only good shows you will be covering are Aquarion EVOL and Symphogear ?
Do you like watching trash and missing on good shows ?
