Shangri-La Frontier #01 — Status Screening

October 1st, 2023

What palpable excitement.

Impressions:

For once, it'd be nice if one of these things were made by somebody who had, at any point in the last twenty years, actually played a video game. Like the promos indicated, it is obnoxiously well-animated… when it bothers to animate anything, which is a rare affair. And that is where the compliments end. As always, it is mainly about calling up, purusing, and explaining the various status screens that it does so love to call up over and over and over and over and over and over. It makes one joke at the start about kicking the heroine of a game and then spends the rest of the time explaining the basics of how RPGs work.

It is the same as every goddamned other one of these. He puts all his points into Luck and grinds for… two whole hours, at which point he is already well on his way to becoming an unstoppable demigod with broken abilities and equipment. Two hours. Everything must be explained at exhaustive length, by him or by a narrator, occasionally by both. Even the fact that the MOST FAMOUS GAME IN THE WORLD PLAYED BY A FULL 5% OF THE ENTIRE EARTH'S POPULATION exists. It'd be like not realizing Legend of Zelda exists and so we sit down and read the entire back of the box. Once every seven minutes or so, it seems to remember its premise about the dude playing bad games and re-explains that. In this case, bad means riddled with bugs, not just banal or poorly designed. No jokes there. Just reminding you of the premise before it's back to the status screens.

I found particulary amusing how he trhoughfully analyzes the enemy appearance and concludes the drop rate of 5% for the red knife.
ITs amusing because any wikia could tell you the exact spawn places and the exact drop % rate.

But the most amusing part was considering the 5% drop rate is someway “rare” and “valuable” item. That made my side blow, thats kind of a merit in a certain way.

I friend told me it was a very funny anime. after dragging my feet for months I finally watched couple of eps and its feels like an AD for a non existent game that might be made into a crappy mobile game if the show gets good ratings.

Im ” amazed” it 25 eps because it looks like trashiest of trash 12 epers. likely lower than Kyuukyoku Shinka
