Seven Spellblades #04 — Random Encounter
July 28th, 2023
Yet another.
Impressions:
This was certainly the best episode of the show so far, but like Malevolent Spirits putting in effort this week, it's so underwhelming that it feels deflating. Probably because it's just literally some random stupid generic monster spawned out of nowhere, but the continued godawful writing should not be underestimated either. The bully Slytherin group got their come-uppance based on the protagonists not actually doing anything, but just being super duper cool, winning their respect and admiration. At least they found the budget to over-animate the bird monster running amok for about twenty seconds. Then the protagonists got involved and it was off to the peanut gallery to discuss how super duper cool and awesome the fight happening off-screen was. What we got to see them fight was mainly speedlines and theatrical clashes.
I think the dumbest part to the point where it was almost funny was how they started out the whole thing by bullying the bleeding heart girl yet again, who resolved to stand up for herself more. And then she spent the entire rest of the episode of them slaughtering random monsters for fun sitting on the side, completely shutting up and no longer part of the episode in any way, shape or form. They even called out how abusive it was and how shocked she was by it, and then she sat there while apparently the entire student body enjoyed their secret illegal underground murder arena. It takes itself so damn seriously for how completely ridiculous every aspect of it is, and not in the fun way.

Pretty solid episode to me. Now, Im aware this is probably just because contemporary low standards. But is nice to see a fantasy fight with a monster that feels like a fantasy fight and not starts and ends with “it uses fire but it doesnt matter because I have fire resistance SSS from the skill I adquired with the ancient red dragon I ate for breakfast”
But eh, Ill take it.
