Nier Automata v1.1a #08 — Splashdown

March 18th, 2023

Eat the fish and end it all.

Impressions:

That A-1 animation budget collapse really is in full force, huh? Another barely animated episode that seemed more designed around fitting in some insert song. Let's splash in the water for a minute. …Okay. *BLASTS MELODRAMATIC INSERT SONG AT MAXIMUM VOLUME* Not sure you set this one up in any way whatsoever, guys, not to mention that it came at around eight minutes into the episode, so certainly wasn't the capstone to an episode or any kind of story. But even in the year of 2023, we have CDs to sell, apparently.

The end of the episode was the only particularly interesting part, and even that was all over the place. 9S stumbles into the lair of a stalker, which will probably turn out to be himself, while the pants cyborg has gone missing, which is a drastic change from every episode since 3 where he was just off-screen. So… yeah. About twenty minutes mainly on shilling a CD, then a minute and a half of cliffhanger. It wasn't an eventful nor engaging episode.

And then there’s another hiatus after this episode.

The VAs drew the pictures and the new room at the end looks very similar to Popola´s library in Nier 1.

The A2 “phantom” is shown for a few frames as Adam. Both have the same haircut so it´s a well done misdirect. 9S saw who he wanted to see. There are hidden frames in half the episodes.

I wonder why Kaine´s theme was played for a character moment for 2B. The androids are constructed from genetic templates and A2 is likely based on Kaine. 2B and A2 are parallel characters. Maybe that´s why. Or music needs to be sold.
