Spy x Family #14 — Dog Parkour

October 8th, 2022

Again, have these people met a single actual dog?

Impressions:

Ehhhhh. I will admit that this is at least slightly closer to what I'd prefer to see, which is to say less "Anya makes stupid faces" and more spy stuff, but this spy stuff was still quite poor. More 24-like torture porn than any of the characters, not even the protagonists mind you, being cool, twists and turns, mentally outplaying each other, etc. Instead, Yor is immediately kicked out of the episode once again, having done her one thing of popping up to kick a dude, and Loid almost literally sits on his hands until the last couple minutes, patiently waiting his turn to exist in the story. Let the protagonists drive the story, not be the deus ex machinas at the end of it, damn it.

Then we get to the supposed climax of the episode, an actual chase scene, and it ends up being just parkour that they decided to add a few extra frames to. Dog parkour at that. I can appreciate things being done for the rule of cool, but this was just incredibly silly in what they clearly were intending to be a serious scene. A serious scene of dog parkour. This is on top of the episoding of this series still being baffling to me. This 'arc' has been going on for three or four episodes now, and the cuts continue to be in the most bizarre places. Adapt for the new medium. Don't just start animating and when you reach twenty minutes, say that's that.
