Spy x Family #13 — Dog Sense

October 1st, 2022

Have any anime studios even heard what a dog actually sounds like?

Impressions:

I don't know how much further I'm going to last with this. My opinion hasn't much changed since the end of the previous season. If it actually stuck to the high octane spy and assassin stuff it sold in the first couple episodes, I'd be on board. I know how cheesy heist stuff is, but that's a very untapped genre in anime. This ain't that though. All the spy stuff is incidental at best. It's closer to one of those Looney Tunes bits where Sylvester has to watch over some baby that wanders into a construction yard or pie factory and shenanigans ensue. Except for this, that's where the spy stuff comes in. Anya wanders into some criminal lair and then mom or dad pop in to save the day. But even that is when it's not entirely focused on her just faffing around, which is probably two thirds of the episodes.

So here we have Anya following a strange dog into a criminal lair, where she makes silly faces until Yor kicks one dude to save the day. Oh, but the dog is a precog, so… shenanigaaaaans. Except not really. Just the one, to be honest. But Anya makes the same silly faces as always, and from what I've gathered from discourse about this show on the internet, that's the big draw and the selling point. Some of the background gags have more thought and creativity put into them than that, but the memes always win, I guess.

I feel its more akin to the Rugrats where the parents have to be bad at watching the kids so we can get them wandering around in numerous locations for shenanigans when its not just different parts of the house.
