Aquatope of White Sand #01 — Computer Fish

Didn't I used to have that as a screensaver?

I did glance at Peach Boy's second episode. It was dire. Quite possibly the lowest budget anything of the season.

Impressions:

No surprises here. Another in PA Work's sappy dramas about vaguely melancholic girls finding their joie de vivre in the local business, usually through meeting a quirky totally platonic girlfriend. These have never clicked for me, nor does this one. They're always so sappy, meandering, and more focused on showcasing the artists' ability to draw backgrounds than in writing a compelling story or even entertaining dialogue. There are girls. They're suffering from generalized teenage ennui. Pick a tourist attraction and make a show on it. Fine and dandy if all you want to do is veg out, listen to some soothing music, look at some pretty landscapes and CGI fish tanks, I suppose.

Admittedly, there are two bizarre scenes that suggest that the main girl may be some kind of… uh… repressed mermaid or something, I guess? She falls asleep on the beach and wakes up surrounded by debris in a pattern. And then when visiting the aquarium, she starts to have an anxiety attack, which turns into the fish swimming out of their tanks and drowning her, except she finds solace in being swarmed by nightmare CGI fish and totally wants more of that because it's the only thing that makes her feel alliiiiiiiiiive. Does that balance out the soporific, lackadaisical other twenty minutes though? Nah.

2 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • The Phantom says:

Good show to fall asleep, not sure what the hell happened when she suddenly went on drugs and warped inside the tank, that picked me interest but pretty sure it will be barely used anymore and it will grow old fast if they overuse it.

No. Nothing is more cheap this season that Getter Robo Arc.
