Little Witch Academia #07 — Fish Are Food, Not Friends

What a transformation and growth from Akko.

Impressions:

So, after last week's big epiphany, or whatever you want to call it, Akko's going to finally start taking things seriously, maturing, and improving, right? Yeah, and I've got some prime Florida real estate to sell you that's definitely not alligator-infested swamp. The only even slight nod they had to any form of self-improvement were a couple quick comments about her supposedly studying and/or shots of her with a book in front of her. Those were drowned out by the standard tantrums that were given about fifteen times as much screentime. The first half of the episode was the standard montage of Akko arrogantly proclaiming her awesomeness, catastrophically screwing up, and then being pissy about it. What a change from the previous standard.

Then we decided to just drop that entirely and do a completely different bit about goldfish teachers, flushing them down the toilet, and then turning themselves into fish (or half-fish) to get them back. Unfortunately, that was also the impetus for the 'climactic' rant at the end about the wondrous treasure that is Akko. I'd say that never has there been a more misguided defense of incompetence and endangerment of students and faculty, but anime manages similar about every other week. They didn't even really do anything with the fish schtick except make three exceptionally weak jokes; the fish being understandable to people, Chariot going "glub glub" and that being 'understandable' (which is really the same joke as the first), and whatever you want to cobble together from that braindead fish and its should've-been-eaten family.

So…basically “learnt” her lesson but she still sucks at magic, even studiying, for unknown reasons?
