Un-IDed and Not Progressing #07 — Subtlety in Character Design

February 19th, 2014

The completely different clothes are useful in distinguishing them from the identical characters we’re supposed to ignore.

Impressions:

I had a premonition during the pre-OP filler segment that X is not Y because Y is not X may very well be the height of the humor for the episode. Probably not true, but that’s the kind of mindset this show’s gotten me into. At least they seem to have given up the melodrama, although I had hoped they would do it by resolving it. Not overly surprising since this is media made in Japan after all, but they usually fabricate some manner of excuse, not simply drop it behind the couch and pretending it no longer exists for a few weeks after a month of gassing on about it.

The episode was centered around a badly overdue new character who did not come even close to my scant hopes. You know Benio’s secondary joke? That she’s adored at school? Well they just took one of the faceless characters obsessed with her and gave her fifteen more minutes. And made her jealous of Mashiro. That’s… kind of it. And since she’s only slightly less nasally than Mashiro, but just as shrill, the end part where they were screaming at each other is the kind of cacophony one normally associates with the Tenth Circle of Hell, where they put people who use sirens and car horns in radio songs. I couldn’t even make a dog girl joke off her either. Talk about a waste of a Konoha.

Next Episode:

Murder, death, shrill.

This is the problem with giving away the “Big Secret” in the middle of the series – now that don’t have anything left to do other than try out various fillers in case something works.

As my father used to say, “They’ve shot their load – they’re through”…
