Winter Premiere Wrapup and Uptown Revue

January 15th, 2013

Winter is not a very busy season.

There’s a limited amount of time in the day, and since I tend to watch things within an hour or two of airing instead of waiting half the day for such pleasantries as subtitles or things in resolutions larger than my laptop’s screen, I vastly prefer to watch things more or less with the broadcast schedule. Here’s the quick list of all the shows that premiered along with a short blurb designed to reduce a 24 minute episode to a quarter second bullet point. Extensive or indicative of the entire show? Hell no. The main goal is to finish it in less time than it took to find a header image. They’re all linked to my posts on them (or something at any rate) if you want more info. The only thing that’s left to air is the new PreCure at the start of February.

And a friendly reminder, most shows are going to be mediocre and forgettable at best, make no mistake about it, so saying that isn’t exactly going out on a limb. My own tastes and preferences are not the last word in everything. Feel free to ramble or do whatever you want in the comments.

Anything that I am 100% certain I’m going to cover for at least another week gets smelt, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stick with it past the next episode or two. Likewise, just because I’m not looking forward to something just yet doesn’t mean that I won’t pick it up. I tend to watch at least part of the second episode of most things, I just don’t write anything if I’ve lost all interest and turned it off after 5 minutes. If you’ve got any input, flames, or desperate begging, go wild.

MONDAY

Amnesia

Talking heads dressed up like Final Fantasy rejects.

Roman

Trying really hard to be an underanimated, uninspired Lupin knockoff and not really succeeding.

 The UNLIMITED

The attempts to make Kyosuke gritty, and the lame new character, are not doing a series I liked any favors at all.

TUESDAY

Nada

WEDNESDAY

 Good Job Club

Very cute, often funny, and highly emotive. Could really stand to be a bit snappier though.

Tamako Market

The bird’s trying to carry the show, but isn’t that funny and there’s not a whole ton of note past him. Animation’s great though.

THURSDAY

I Don’t Have Many Friends

Replace them all with feral weasels with worms in their brains and then we’ll talk.

Kotoura

Split evenly between absolutely atrocious melodrama and passable romantic comedy.

 Sasami Doesn’t Try

Should jettison the obnoxious male lead, but nice to see Shinbo at least somewhat leashed for the first time in half a decade.

Vividred Operation

About 18 totally wasted minutes, then it turned into what might be an okay magical girl show. Or not.

FRIDAY

Chihaya Full

I’m good on girly drama, bloom, and flower/sparkly backgrounds for a while, thanks.

Cuticle Detective Inaba

No shortage of jokes, just not good jokes. Also budget.

Maoyuu

First episode just had breasts. Second episode didn’t even have that.

 Problem Children

Fun characters, decently animated. Just needs to shut the hell up and let them actually do things.

SATURDAY

AKB0048

BUY AKB CDS. BUY AKB CDS. BUY AKB CDS. BUY AKB CDS. BUY AKB CDS. BUY AKB CDS.

Caught in the Carnage…

Needs to turn the tint knob down, move faster than a glacier, and get characters with an ounce of imagination to them.

Da Capo III

Somehow manages to be more centered around boobs than almost every other show this season.

Minami-ke

Continues its decline from the first season by utterly eviscerating the budget.

Strange Dogs

Just incredibly bland and unambitious without any distinguishing characteristics at all.

 Young Justice: Invasion

Will probably be put on hiatus again within two weeks anyway. I still miss Spec Spidey.

SUNDAY

Ixion Saga DT

Running on fumes thanks to a recent decent episode, but needs to step up the funny fast.

Love Live!

Nice music and when it tries to be silly, it’s really quite decent, but it does not usually try to be silly.

Senran Kagura

Depressing to see the action disappear in the second episode and replaced by frog gropings. Still outboobing Da Capo.

Wrapup:

Not the most interesting of seasons, but there were at least a few shows that caught my eye. Winter’s usually pretty slow anyway. I still have no good idea what I’m going to do with Saturday or Sunday, but I’ll probably end up covering a pair each day. Maybe just ogling breasts as a morning ‘activity’ while I’m still in a vague daze. And now that this is out of the way, I can go back to randomly rambling.

Aah, the burden of irresponsibility.

7 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • ZakuAbumi says:

…Always meant to ask this, but what is it with your obsession with guinea pigs?

  • Benigmatica says:

So you dropped Sakurasou, and then you dropped Minami-ke too?!

    • algorithm says:

Dropping any Mari Okada’s show is what any human being with the bare minimum of common sense should do.

  • Durandal says:

You should watch both D.C.III and Senran Kagura; only you know how to “properly” describe those fan service scenes =)

  • algorithm says:

Tamako Market is probably the only thing remotely watchable as long as I give the subs the middle finger and tap into my nihongo hidden powerlevel. Animation.
