Love Live! #02 — By the Power of the Tarot

January 13th, 2013

The parts of this show I understand the least are the ones I think I like the most.

Impressions:

I’m still not entirely sure here. There are moments, like when one of the characters throws open a window and makes a declaration to the sky while a blast of wind blows the conveniently placed deck of tarot cards all over the place, slapping the Sun card against a wall, where the show very obviously trying to make sure nobody’s taking it seriously. Or the ‘idol’ comedy/military groups. But those are the exception more than the rule and much of it is fairly generic "girls want to make a club" schlock. This episode though, there’s not as much, or any really, singing to distract from that.

As with the first episode, the sillier it tries to be and the more it indulges in pseudo-melodrama for comedy’s sake, generally the more enjoyable it is. It does a much better job at that than any of the friendship crap. It’s still half-assing that instead of really jumping into the mudpit of corniness and splashing around. If it abandoned all this feel-good school nonsense and just tried to be a comedy plus music/idols, the whole thing would be much improved. And maybe add some feral aliens too, while we’re at it…
