Fate/Zero #08 — Suddenly… Flashback!

Who needs cohesion?

Impressions:

This is probably about as good as the show’s going to get, so I guess it’s worth at least celebrating noting that. It still spent minutes on end in magical technobabble that should have been done in seconds (or not existed at all), abused the ugly CG as a punching dummy for no good reason, two out of the three ‘fights’ consisted of people standing still while shooting at and/or shooting CG blobs with the third having a CG bird flying around, and had a lengthy flashback explaining the magic gun before showing how magic it is, so… you know… there’s room for improvement. Particularly the flashback. He shoots his magic gun, smirks, then it cuts back to Saber and Lancer after their aborted excuse for a fight. Then, without any setup or transition, we’re suddenly in the past explaining how the gun is magic. Is this being storyboarded by a team of gerbils?

But hey, like I said, this was probably the most enjoyable episode to date. Even the music was better than usual, particularly Iri’s scene. The action remains lacklustre at best but at least there was a hell of a lot more of it here than any other episode and they only narrated what they were seeing for twice as long as they should have instead of five times. And they didn’t even have to use Iskander to do it! It’s a bloody Thanksgiving miracle.

The Light Novel does the same thing, blame urobochi.

Well, at that segment I was like: hmm, that’s the voice of someone from KnK, then she started to talking about nonsense to a kid looking scared; I thought, no, maybe that’s the serial killer guy who is caster’s master. Finally she bring out the bullet. Oh, well, I guess we are in the past. I actually rewind to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

LOL yup same screenshot is the same: 64, 66. they gotta save some budget money somehow, right?

    you are an idiot

The flashback wasn’t too badly placed, but they really should have shown more of Kenneth agonizing over it and maybe what’s going on in his body.

O.o seriously? He must have vomited over a gallon of blood, and he was clawing at his neck like a Hinamizawa syndrome victim. Well I guess some cool X-ray effects showing all of his nerves being torn up and grafted together wouldn’t have hurt, but otherwise I think it got the message across.

As for the flashback: it didn’t seem that out of place to me, but that was only because I am a LN reader and I knew it was going to happen, so I caught on right away. It was probably pretty disorienting for anime only watcher.

Overall this was the best episode to date. I was half expecting a monologue/narration to go on about how Gae Daerg would cut off the mana from Caster’s book, thus leading to the minions exploding. However this ep was mostly all awesome fights with few breaks in between (Of course there was that flashback haha).

I was watching this with my sister, and she said something along the lines of “Wow the CG is so good.” I almost burst out laughing when thinking about how contrasting her opinion was compared to the ones found here.

I love how, after blocking bullets with his forearms and shanking a woman, Kotomine just jogs away like a moron. This is after he shatters a tree through the sheer force generated by vicious pelvic thrusts.
