Is This a Zombie? #10 — …Out Walking The Guinea Pig

March 21st, 2011

I barely remember when it was a good thing that this show made no bloody sense.

Impressions:

You know, I feel like all I need to do to mock this episode is to just summarize what happened. Like the last one, this continues the show’s downward spiral in the most bizarre directions, this time involving a guinea pig.

To begin with, we fast forward months into the future where… nothing’s happened. Sera was apparently attacked by someone offscreen. Glad we got to see that. Then Haruna accidentally orders a Stradivarius instead of spaghetti, whereupon we learn that Sera knows how to play the violin from her time in the vampire ninja orchestra. I THINK WE HAVE A FOCUS PROBLEM HERE, DEEN. Then there’s a cut to Ayumu running into the other zombie giving pet care advice to some random old woman while taking his pet guinea pig out for a walk. …Because guinea pigs apparently like the smell of death. I kid you not, that is what he says. Zombie v1.0 then cuts off Ayumu’s legs and threatens the rest before Mael shows up with a light saber and a whole cadre of other light saber wielding ninjas to chase him off so he can go to the zoo and watch the penguins sleep.

Skipping a little bit forward, Eu’s just standing around outside Ayumu’s house. Sera finds her, gets slashed in the back, and Zv1 finally gets Eu to go with him. About an hour later, Ayumu and Haruna head to his apartment where he invites them in for dinner, so of course they eat. Then the ninja cadre busts in, so Zv1 puts a bomb hat on Haruna’s head and leaves with Eu. Since they fail to disarm the bomb hat, Ayumu puts it on his head with seconds left, and jumps out the window. He’s then somehow teleported miles away and explodes.

Seriously? My brain tingles. And not in the good way. It looks like they’re really going with the whole "immortality is a curse" angle too, which makes even less sense since Eu’s first reaction to seeing Zv1 was to put a scythe into his chest. Maybe that’s like a love tap as far as zombies are concerned. Maybe they’re going some obtuse direction with there actually being a reason that Eu doesn’t want to kill him despite his wish to die, but given the writing these past couple episodes, I wouldn’t be shocked if the guinea pig turned out to be the evil mastermind pulling everybody’s strings all along.

Aside from the last episode in Kyouko’s arc, this show’s quality has been completely the opposite of how seriously it takes itself. I don’t even know what the hell it’s doing or why it’s doing it half the time. Wwhy did we need to skip forward months? Was there some point to giving Sera a violin? And Mael a light saber? And using a ‘cliffhanger’ of an immortal zombie suffering what appeared to be a relatively mundane bomb blast? Not three minutes prior, he was being lectured about how much it sucked to be COMPLETELY UNKILLABLE. I really can’t believe I’m saying this, but come on, Deen. You can be so much better than this. What the bloody hell are you doing?

  • Nanaya says:

If it weren’t for the earlier Kyouko arc and him possessing her and everything, I would have said that he was probably an initially decent guy who was trying too hard to be evil so Eu would end him. She probably has/had a crush on him or is related to him or something.

  • Derek says:

Good episode, the bomb part was the best :D

  • DmonHiro says:

Was there at least some awesome violence to justify the 1 week delay they said?

    • Okita says:

Yea you know cause a huge earthquake and tsunami don’t justify anything nowadays =/

      • DmonHiro says:

No, the announcement was made that episode 10 was delayed because of “extreme graphic violence”, not the quake. I was just wondering if the “extreme graphic violence” was present.

        • Aroduc says:

Huh. Wasn’t aware of that. Maybe they had Ayumu explode like a nuclear reaction in the middle of the city originally. I could see how that might not go down well.

  • Amyable says:

The last two episodes have been the worst in the series IMO, but at least Hot Angry Ninja Friend on a Cellphone made a brief return.

  • Aex says:

Yuu just turned herself into a cliche tragic heroine… I hate cliche tragic heroines. The rest was too bipolar to really enjoy. One second, serious, one second, funny. The transition was too fast to really enjoy either aspect. The dinner scene at the end was the most annoying though. Wanted to beat Haruna.

how long till Madoka 11 ?

  • ewan says:

    I nearly forgot this series…
I’m very excited for the new season.

By the way, aroduc where’s your season anime preview? Since you make the most accurate ones…

    • Aroduc says:

We’re only barely under half a month until it starts. It’ll be done Saturdayish. Nothing starts until the first anyway and that’s X-Men. Plus, broadcast schedules are still a little bit fluxing due to the tsunami.

everything will be better next anme season

  • Mesousa says:

Wait, Sera gets hurt? TWICE? Awesome.

  • ShuffleAir says:

Your summary was even better than the episode itself.
