High School of the Dead #07 — Heavenly Bodies

August 16th, 2010

Objects with that much inertia usually end up in orbit.

Impressions:

This is both a step in the right direction and a step in the wrong direction. It was a really fun episode regardless, but we’ll begin with the poor. The zombies were essentially not animated this week. I particularly ‘enjoyed’ the three stills that they faded in and out to simulate movement. It was like a zombie fog rolling across the streets. I also liked the father’s magical shrinking and expanding bloodstain that looked like it was done using the spraycan tool in MSPaint. The T&A also somehow managed to threaten last week’s levels and was beyond ridiculous. We’re talking almost Eiken levels of out of control boob physics here. Those things almost hit geosynchronous orbit at times. The writing also remains more or less insultingly bad. "If I walk at zombie eye level, I’m safe! Just so long as none of them extend their arms slightly upwards." Plus, how exactly did that gate get closed and locked after Boy Wonder crashed his bike on zombie panties anyway? Plus, why the hell did he need to save the girl and the dog? Is he going to eat it? Either one?

The good side is that a lot of the ridiculous aspects came together for once. They spit out not only an insert song for the initial assault, but extended the ED as a second insert song of sorts for the escape. Hirano also apparently has a magical shotgun that sends zombies blasting off into space. Like I said, it’s obvious where the budget came from for these scenes, but at least it was well spent. Plus, sometimes the T&A was so wrong and poorly placed that it was hilarious. I defintely chucked at dramatic ass. The pacing was also decent for the most part this week too. The little girl is trivial in the scheme of things, but as far as just this episode went, it didn’t feel dragged out. At least outside of the 80 seconds of cheesecake shots and recycled footage they used to begin the episode.

Why exactly didn’t they get dressed before leaving?

23 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Myssa Rei says:

Are you sure, Aroduc? Because he clearly locks the gate in the source material:

I’ll just chalk it to the production staff focusing on the fanservice instead of other details.

    • Aroduc says:

I checked that scene again. Takashi runs towards the gate, Hirano shoots two zombies, then Takashi runs off screen and there’s a metallic sound and it immediately cuts to the little girl cowering. I guess that was supposed to be him closing the gate. Sounds almost the same as the gunfire though. And still offscreen.

  • Yue says:

Suddenly, I don’t even know if this show is the same show that gave me an impression that this is an action show from start to finish.

Consistency apparently only applies to how much BOOBs I can tolerate every week. Fortunately, Touhou will be a great distraction and MBAA arcade is a joy to compete in. ^_^

  • Aex says:

Gotta say I do enjoy how they’re extending the fight scenes from the manga versions. Of course, they’re also making sure that every girls breast bounces at least 20 times an episode, but hey, can’t complain! Best episode yet!

Saeko being her awesome self in an apron and thong… this might be the first episode of the series I’ll actually re-watch a few times…

  • cutemi2 says:

Is Gunpla Builders episode 1 is out yet

  • Nanaya says:

Plus, why the hell did he need to save the girl and the dog? Is he going to eat it? Either one?

Come on, only an unforgivable asshole would ditch a little girl AND her puppy to zombies.

  • Sporklord says:

I really wish they would define the zombie rules a little better. I don’t understand how Hirano firing multiple gunshots didn’t attract them down the street away from the little girl.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but when he walks along the wall it looks like he is in between a completely empty lawn, and a zombie horde. Why again doesn’t he just walk inside the wall?

I’m also torn between face palming and laughing my ass off at ZOMBIE panty shot they throw in at random intervals.

…Clearly I am thinking waaaay too hard about this.

    • Yue says:

Yes, you are clearly straining your thought on such a boobfest-zombie-infested show, Lord Of Sporks.

      I can’t help admire the creativity in your name well enough. Kudos. ^^;

    • Aroduc says:

Next you’ll question why the girl crying attracted zombies, but the guy banging on the door and yelling didn’t. Or why people who are trying to ‘hide’ are sitting in their house with all the lights on. For shame.

  • Man0warr says:

Zombie rules always bend to fit the current scene/plot in movies, and this is an homage to all those movies :o

Like how zombies ignore the sound animals, but metallic sounds and human screaming set them off. It’s just how it is.

    • Aex says:

Or how zombies ignore animals PERIOD! There was a friggen cat sleeping on the wall without a care in the world (tail was swaying, definitely wasn’t dead). If zombies did react to heat, you’d think one of them would’ve reached up and at least annoyed the thing enough to make it move.

      • Myssa Rei says:

Some of the zombie rules seem iffy (like the Romero rules run through a Japanese perspective filter), but it IS known that they don’t react to body heat, and rather gravitate towards sound.

Of course, taking THAT into consideration raises a lot of problems on its own.

        • Aroduc says:

It’s more of an issue of a lack of internal consistency than of not sticking to someone else’s rules.

  • Mesousa says:

Takagi totally wants Hirano. Hell, his characteristics are slowly building to her.

  • Yue says:

Of course, all of you guys wouldn’t deny that enmassed Skeletons are MORE intelligent than enmassed Zombies.

This staple knowledge came from years of battling skeletons and zombies in role-playing games. Both are reanimated undead but creature skills and complexity become more advanced at further levels of decomposition. Perplexing! ^_^

  • TJ says:

The scene of Saeko standing on top of a moving Humvee was just too much lol.

  • Maserbeam says:

It’s Miyuki Sawashiro using her sexy voice. I couldn’t care less about anything else.

Almost. Episode 4 did push me close to immediately dropping the show.

  • Lero says:

As a friend of mine said: “Fuck yeah Saeko! With those legs the air resistance is nothing!”

  • Maji says:

what a good photo!!! I love it!! -3-

  • rincewind says:

    Always save the dog!

    Emergency supplies.

  • sphyo says:

You mentioned an insert song at the beginning of the assault. Any clue about what the songs name is? I haven’t been able to find it.
