Review of Systems

Yada yada yada…

First off, I finished up the last bits of translating GA last night. All that’s left is to make sure there aren’t too many glaring typos and to clean up some images and I can put a stamp on it. I’ll have more to say about that when I put out finalish patch next week. I do have every intention of working on Moonlit Lovers, but I think I need at least a month or so off from GA first. Luckily, the same tools work for ML, so I can pretty much get started whenever I feel like it, although given that the structure of the game is entirely different, progress might be a bit… weird and nowhere near as universally linear as GA1 was.

Along those lines, I’ve already decided what I want to work on next, and while the tools still aren’t quite in place, I’ve already polished off the introduction, which is probably the largest script in the entire initial segment. It’s a bit of a different game from GA and BMW… it uses the third person. Gasp! It’s a fantasy nation builder that takes place in Japan’s past. There’s the usual; build buildings, recruit priestesses and ninjas, fight pirates and Christians. And everything I’ve just said may have been designed to completely mislead you. Or maybe not. I’ll make a formal announcement when I have something I can actually show as decent progress. It’s not like I’m really keeping it a secret, but I find it more fun this way. Maybe I can run some kind of nonsense poll about it to amuse myself over the holiday anime break. In all liklihood, I’ll probably start splitting time between it and ML once I get through all the core story and gameplay portions.

On the other side of the pond, my disappointment with this season of Venture Bros is only matched by my enjoyment of Community. The pilot episode really was pretty poor, but after that, it has been nothing short of stellar and has surpassed 30 Rock for me as the funniest show currently on air. It also helps that one of the recurring characters is Mentok, but that’s just icing.

Better Off Ted’s second season finally started this week as well, and it’s great to have it back. Venture Bros, on the other hand, has ditched one of my favorite characters and replaced him with somebody who can only say "I LIKE LITTLE BOYS." And then one of the very few new parody setups this season was… another pedophile. Fantastic. Hell, the story’s only left the compound/Monarch’s house all of maybe once the entire truncated season. There have been a few good episodes in there, but this has easily been my least favorite season.

I don’t really have much to say about anime or blogging at the moment. This is the time of the year that I typically try to ignore the community as much as possible while everybody tries to make as many nonsensical lists as they can spew out based on arbitrary temporal demarcations. Here, you can use the same list that I made last year. I expect this year to be even worse thanks to the non-end of the decade. Luckily, I have… let’s see… 23 bookmarked pages worth of doujin game and Comiket announcements that I’ve been procrastinating writing about. That ought to keep me busy once pretty much every single show I’m watching ends next week. We’re still three weeks off from the Winter season starting, so I haven’t even begun to look at any of that stuff yet, although two Zexcs shows does pique my interest.

I am interested to know if anybody really cares all that much about my shift to using mostly streamed shows. The tradeoff is lower quality screencaps, but in return, I’m not subject to the same degree of whimsy of raw providers and can keep a relatively normal schedule that doesn’t have a +/- 5 hour field where shows may or may not show up. The dubious thrill of being able to beat the other raw bloggers to post is also completely gone after some six odd months of nothing but victories. I’m not sure how much the LQ caps even matter though, since only maybe one or two actually shows anything worth seeing outside of the thumbnail. But that’s just me. I’m open to an alternate opinion.

I’ve also been summarizing a lot less lately, which is mostly a product of being a little busier than I was a year ago, but I feel a little twinge of guilt every time I don’t try to jot down at least a sentence about the content of an episode that I liked. I’ve got no pity for the episodes that I don’t. So anyway, if you have any suggestions or the like, leave them here and I’ll mull it over.

And that’s all I have to say about that. I’ve still got a final to finish writing up on the pathophysiology of generalized anemia, so that’s how I’ll be spending my last free weekend before getting dragged into the dubious joy of the holidays and it starts to drive me slightly insane.

Moreso than usual at any rate.

13 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Eirias says:

    A fellow med student? Wonderful. How on Earth do you have time to run such a timely blog? What year are you?

  • You know, content aside, this post is rather kind of remarkable in its own way. Is it a ramble couched in an image gallery, or an image gallery interspersed between a ramble? Or both?! I sort of imagine it like “now I’m going to talk about things not really related to anime, so here: have some fanservice”. Wait, maybe there’s something to that principle… I’m not sure if it’s heaven or hell for people with ADD/ADHD — “Oh look an image– wait, what was he saying again?” ^^;

    Anyway, congrats on the completion (or near-completion) of your work on GA — that’s quite an achievement! Good luck as well on your future projects; hope that it manages to remain enjoyable enough for you even when you’re forcing your way through it.

    And yeah… ’tis the season of year-end lists, and the “apparent” end of the decade compounds this. Of course I suppose it’s fun to reminisce and look back over what once was… but yeah, I tend to avoid it as well. ^^;

  • Fate says:

    That is a hell of a lot of fanservice.

  • Haesslich says:

    I approve of the extra Seitokai fanservice. Mind you, with streaming anime becoming more of an option for viewing these days, it’s not necessarily a bad thing to shift over to it.

  • karasu says:

    that was a ass move, aroduc, I actually spent the rest of the night watching community instead of studying for tomorrow’s final.

  • Anonymous says:

    I actually like your opinions of shows more than I like reading actual summaries, so the shorter blurbs are just fine for me.

  • Fate says:

    I do that sometimes too. Hear of a show than I OCD watch it instead of doing my homework like today for example. I watched 14 episodes of Ouran Host Club thanks to discovering it today.

  • Shiro, Long Tail's says:

    Community surpassed 30 Rock as funniest show of the season around episode two or three. The after credits Abed and Troy moment are easily my favorite part.

    This picture is so awesome.

  • Anise Punter says:

    So much Seitokai fanservice, so much wasted on Kurimu; why I ask, why?!

    Dead on about Venture Brothers though. Dead on.

  • Lero says:

    Faptastic pics XD.
