All Hallows’ Eve

October 31st, 2009

Welcome to the festival of the dead.

The dead arise to walk the earth but once a year
Their souls fly forth to return from whence they came
With them come hoary spirits long passed from this sphere
And the denizens of the night to which terror is but a game.
Curses and hexes come alive to bring the living woe
Ghouls and ghosts seek to steal innocence from its bed
Skeletons gleefully wake to dance their grim fandango
While apparitions turn fanciful folk tales into crippling dread
This is the night when candles are lit to give humans their path
And dispell the illusions wrought by terror and fear
For the eyes cannot be trusted against dark magic’s wrath
And the whispers of banshees’ lies to those who draw near
Through the pandemonium of spirits remains a truth none can resist

During the preternatural spectacle of All Hallows’ Eve, witches exist.

Unfortunately, I really shared about the only deep thoughts that I have about the holiday a couple years before, so I guess I’ll use this to just talk about how Galaxy Angel’s coming. Ever since I’ve hit chapter 7 (route split), I’ve gotten into a serious groove. Part of it is because there’s a rather lot of relatively redundant text for each route where someone says something, and then whoever’s route you’re on has a one-line response followed by something like "Tact: I agree, Milfie/Ranpha/Mint/Forte/Vanilla." It also helps that 7 and 8 are basically mandatory scenes from start to finish without any of the generic ship stuff where the most random of crap comes up. The start of chapter 8 is pretty plot dense as well and those parts are always the easiest and most fun to translate.

Once I finish Chapter 8 (probably Sunday or Monday) and get a chance to look at how Chapter 9 is structured, I’ll make a decision whether to fill in the other four routes up to that point or just finish Milfie’s route for the next patch release. It’s hard to even tell how long Chapter 9 is because all of the generic flag files and affection/mood definitions are are mixed in there and it doesn’t quite follow the same naming structure of the other chapters. Scene 901 (chapter 9, scene 1) for example, is tucked away in 9997.scn before moving backwards to 9996.scn, which is just one giant set of control statements directing the game into the rest of the files more normally. Chapter 10 and 11 are extremely short though. Hopefully, if I can keep up this speed, I should be able to finish the game by the end of November, but that’s probably pushing it, plus doesn’t really include time for editing and checking or figuring out any hiccups that come up when I reteach myself how to subtitle these strangely encoded movies, although I’m really hopeful that I can just cheat there and change them to something without a garbage header.

I do feel like noting that I probably won’t start working on Moonlit Lovers as soon as I finish GA though. There are a couple other games that I’d like to see translated, and at least one of them is very short. The other… not so much, but it is divided into multiple parts (well, both are actually) and I think that if I finish one chunk, it might be enough to at least get some interest going in it and maybe then someone else will pick it up. Or like BMW and GA, I’ll just end up doing it very slowly. I definitely do plan to work on GA:ML though. I booted it up earlier today just to look at all the graphical upgrades over GA. I was also slightly excited because the script files were about 13% smaller, but then I realized that I hadn’t installed the Chitose add-on yet and they jumped to being slightly larger than GA, but the redundancy of the routes still probably means that it’ll be a bit easier. Eternal Lovers on the other hand… that’s somewhat larger than both GA and ML combined. I may need a running start to tackle the last edition of the trilogy.

Well, that’s all I’ve got. Hope your Halloween has been a little less rainy than mine, but at least I did manage to get my mutts down to the dog park about 30 minutes before the skies opened and now my home smells like wet sheltie. On the other hand, it’s all the more candy for me.
