Kekkaishi #40 — Oh God, A Training Arc…

November 4th, 2007

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…..

Impressions:

I’d feel bad about being slow (relatively speaking) covering this, and not really summarizing for the literally dozen of people watching Kekkaishi if:

A.) Something happened.
B.) It didn’t look like we’re in store for some training episodes up ahead.

Basically, Yoshi goes back on his “I need to become stronger to protect people and seal Karasumori” and then ends up tailing Tokiko in what could generously be called a disguise by attaching his Thread (have I complained recently how lame the technique names are in Kekkaishi?… because they are) to her taxi and skateboarding behind it. Finally, after she drops him into the rive, he begs her to train him. She refuses, and uses the Absolute Edge (‘Zekkai’) when he makes a move to follow her again (same thing Masamori used when the Wind Lord attacked him), thus emasculating him even more, though she doesn’t actually tell him what she did. The next episode preview is Yoshi in training garb jumping around and being attacked by crows. You can imagine how rapt I must be.

The problem with Kekkaishi these past few weeks is that it’s lost its way. Counting the hiatus, it’s been almost three months since there’s been ANYTHING to be excited about. No good fight scenes, no good humor, no good action, absolutely nothing. The constant hiatuses are awful, but when you come back from them and have absolutely nothing to show for it, that just boggles the mind. I realize that with the air-time screwiness and the loss of sponsors, something had to go, but one of the great things about the earlier episodes is that things were always in motion. Even before there was Kokoboro, new things were happening and Karasumori, Yoshi, Tokine, even the dogs were developed and added to. Ever since Gen’s death/the hiatus, the whole thing has ground to a complete stop. The villains are content to sit back at their home base and hang out, nothing is imminently occuring and it doesn’t look like that’ll be changing any time soon either. It saddens me to see Kekkaishi slowly dying like this, but we’re almost to the point where it’ll have been an entire season without a quality episode. That’s just… terrible.

While I understand where you’re coming from with the “it’s back after several weeks and nothing happens” thing, it’s not really the series’ plot fault, but rather the retarded screening choices of the TV stations involved. The “last big fight” actually happened merely 3 episodes ago, and someone who comes fresh to Kekkaishi and watches all in one go up until now will not have the slightest problems with the show’s current pacing. It’s roughly the same with those who follow weekly manga publications. It’s frustrating when the plot progresses at “a sail’s pace” and almost nothing happens after you’ve waited a week, but when read in one go, the plot flows rather well. That’s why I can’t understand phrases like “ever since Gen’s death”, as almost no time at all has passed from the series perspective.
