Hell’s Paradise #05 — “Let’s Continue To Review…”

April 29th, 2023

Hell is listening to people do pointless recap.

Impressions:

I think this is where this was the final straw for me. The pacing going from atrocious to truly horrifically godawful is just too much. The protagonists spent the entire goddamned episode recapping the situation to each other. Practically every single scene could have begun with "As you already know…" The monsters are monstrous. The girl is insecure. The dude is slightly different from how we said he is but has literally never actually been at any point in the episode. Is this really the most interesting way we could be spending our time?

They tried to throw in some sexist silliness that women belong barefoot and pregnant, but that was literally just the one random dude setting off more angsty flashbacks, just like every other damn thing. Asking her if she wants jam on toast would probably trigger some PTSD episode about how her mother never loved her. I guess the four minute aside to some other random couple characters also had that too. Was that the theme of the episode? Maybe we shouldn't have spent three fourths of it doing recap then.

Lennie Small and his wild swing is my hero. Curley needed to be put out of his misery for the misogynistic chat that took up most of the episode.

Episode 6 was actually an improvement. Female lead finally got her shit together and the plot has (probably) started actually moving.

I still found it pretty dull and awfully paced. Especially the “My sword worked exactly once, and has now completely stopped working for the next twelve minutes until we explain through extensive internal narration that swords only cut if you have enough DETERMINATION.” And if the enemy is in the proper position. Ignoring that we started the show by doing the whole “Gabimaru is invulnerable to exactly this because he… tensed his muscles.” Granted, far better than the last few episodes, but shounen is… not my thing.
