NPC in the World of Girl Games… #01 — Sword Gun

April 3rd, 2022

Mightier than the gun sword.

Impressions:

This might have been a little more palatable if it had seemed aware that the sexism it kept screaming was unfair and completely unjust is still extremely endemic, but self-awareness in a cheat power show? Pfft. In particular, it really hates girl games. It's not a bad game because it's a mess of nonsense thrown together at random, it's a mess of nonsense because it's a girl game for girls. Which is what we spend about the first eight minutes of the show ranting about. Cheat power reincarnation shows aren't bad because they're made by lazy hacks for power fantasies, they're bad because they're all filled with the same terrible lazy tropes. Punching down makes the humor hard to swallow, but luckily, there's also very little of it.

Anyway, as usual, our protagonist is the weakest and just wants a regular life. One half of that sentence lasts to the end of the episode, the other lasts until five seconds after he says it. He defeats his one token enemy and gets the strongest weapons and all the money. Truly a subversion of the genre. This is one of the few shows so far this season to not pain me with the music, which stood out to me solely because everything else has been so aggressively painful, but don't expect anything at all from the animation, and there's nothing to be said for the characters or story yet because it hasn't introduced them in any way except for declaring its own title to be the transparent lie that we all knew it was. So here's another cheat power reincarnation show, now with a little added sexist vitriol, as if that was something that the subgenre was ever lacking.

  • LUNI_TUNZ says:

Now they’re even getting lazy with the causes of death in these shows.

My frail 94-year old grandfather once fell down a flight of stairs, and didn’t even break anything.

    This punk gets isekaid.

  • The Phantom says:

I died and got isekaied as a pirate, I died and got isekaied as a farmer, I died and got isekaied as a npc, I died and got isekaied as cheat magician, I died and got isekaied with my smartphone… these shows, can they freaking stop this copy/pasted idiotic premise, its annoying, every season multiples of these come out and are equally terrible.

    • Aroduc says:

It wouldn’t be so bad if there wasn’t so much godawful baggage.

I seriously think at this point that the collapse of the VN industry, especially the VN to anime pipeline, has had a major deleterious effect on the anime industry as well, despite VNs sharing a lot of the same power fantasy grossness issues.
