Kabukichou Sherlock #01 — Spontaneous Rakugo

October 11th, 2019

Good thing it's not Pride Month.

Impressions:

You know you're reaching when it goes "Hey, you know what the Sherlock Holmes formula is missing? Rakugo." Not like there was someone involved with rakugo killed, or the case involved rakugo people. No, it was pretty damn close to a random murder that someone happened to draw blood wings around the victim to pin on someone else. It's just that at about the 18 minute mark, it did the "Here's what happened" bit as a rakugo performance, with the killer being Random Dude Who Had Not At This Point Existed At All In The Episode, which I'm pretty sure violates a whole buttload of Mystery Rules™. When confronted, he screamed in horror like a damn Phoenix Wright character. Then Sherlock, who was still doing his 'comedy' bit, got run over by Watson, which I guess is closer to comedy than the damn rakugo. I should also mention the cabaret musical number from a drag queen Mrs Hudson.

So not really a strong episode by mystery standards. It clearly thinks of itself as a comedy though, but I don't think it has the chops for that either. Watson is a refrigerator-shaped lump. Sherlock just does the normal Sherlock rattle-off-a-random-factoid thing that sends characters into paroxyms. The joke for all the other cops is that they're arrogant bumbling clowns. And like the promos suggested, it finds the existence of transsexuals and/or drag queens hilarious. I guess that means that its humor is somewhat more varied than, say, Animal Road, for example. The only part that threatened a chuckle was Sherlock being pancaked though, and that's because I was sick of him. At least it didn't have a narrator or force us to suffer through Watson describing everything happening in front of him, but he was close to a mobile sack of concrete the whole episode anyway.

Not quite the mortifying abomination that Hapxiel was, improvement noted

It could work if it had no ties to Sherlock and mysteries were better or at least more fun. The one in the second ep was mildly fun but feels like they did not do anything with it. in the right hands it could be the ungo of this season
