Fafner With an E #02 — Here We Are, At the Place We Were Going To

January 15th, 2015

And other helpful announcements from the cast.

SaeKano barely made it past the opening credits before it was blithely expositing about how its own characters were gigantic cliches, again, and Fafnir had once again a whole lot of nothing happening before they retirned to the honeymoon suite where a lot more nothing happened.

Impressions:

That leaves this, and just because everything else today has inspired disgust in me, that doesn’t mean this is winning me over either. I still don’t know what I’m supposed to anchoring my interest here to, but I suspect (especially from the OP) that the answer is supposed to be “the setting.” That’s not a character I’m going to be able to get behind, guys. While stuff happens, at least moreso than anything else today, it’s so drawn out that there’s not much excitement or tension to it. It’s taken them nearly forty minutes just to get to “mysterious magic girl arrives on island (to hang out with other magical girl(s)).” He climbs into the cockpit of his mech and then they spend the next  minute and a half going through pre-launch checks, and a few minutes later, another thirty seconds or so launching.

The entire ‘battle’ is more simply announcing random technobabble than any actual action. Maybe it means something to someone actually familiar with Fafner, but I’m not, nor can I imagine them being entertained by it either, just it maybe not being quite so random. Or even just the shocking question of “They’re here to help!?” that was repeated three times over. Or the exposition. Ugh. The expostion. One of them even announced that they were arriving on the island as if somehow everyone had forgotten the island’s name. It’s D. The island’s name is D. And someone apparently thought they might be lost and arriving at a different secret island filled with giant robots. Also, the mechs are magical vampires that drain your soul or will randomly eat you apparently (because of course they are), but only, you know, for melodramatic purposes because the writers are too lazy to come up with anything that makes any sense.

So I’m not on board yet, and I’m not sure that’ll change. This was merely the show I watched/flipped through today that I least felt needed to be dragged into the desert and then shot in the face.

  • Dave Baranyi says:

Aw, come on… don’t give up on all of these Thursday shitty shows! What will we laugh at if you aren’t spewing bile out on this sort of trash? Take it for the Team!

  • Germanguy says:

Looks like the last Seconds showed us, that not all on this Plane was there to be friendly. It looks that 2 are there to Steal their “Best Mecha”. But for what? Earth Human Shadow power play?

The “Good” Guys are fighting themselves, as even these Enemy’s are not enough thread

  • Dynellen says:

As far as I remember the people on the island are unable to have children due to alien shenanigans when they first appeared. All the children of genetically engineered/cloned/etc. this in combination with using alien technology to power those mechas makes them great at using the machines but the alien parts will still slowly do the same thing as the real aliens, assimilate the pilot.

  • The Phantom says:

No one has still died but is going well, this is giving me vibes of the anime season back so many years ago, which I certainly liked (not the movie, I hated that POS).

At this point I believe this is my favorite show of the season (which is godawful to begin with) but I admit I am probably driven by nostalgia.
