Selector Infected WIXOSS #01 — Crawling In My Skin

April 3rd, 2014

Help! There’s an ice cream monster in my apocalyptic dream world and it’s melting!

Belated Edit: Riddle aired for real today with a (mostly unanimated) OP as expected.

Impressions:

I think this is what you’d get if you put every magical girl show from the last few years into a blender. You’ve got the cheesy card crap of things like Fantasista Dolls, the apocalyptic world of Madoka or BRS, the angsty “jam pouring out of my eyes” of Daybreak or I guess Madoka again, and the obnoxious squeaky things of Pretty Cure, although the squeaking is being done by the protagonist’s magical girl, which is less a character and more a dog’s squeaky toy. Add on top of that Yu-Gi-Oh’s silly magical cardgame platforms and you’re set. There’s even a grandparent that may as well have “Will be sent to the Phantom Zone” tatooed on her forehead. Maybe they’ll surprise me and just give her a heart attack instead.

It’s banking a lot on people wanting to see where its darkness goes though, and probably hoping that’s enough to carry things because the rest of the episode was pretty dull, exemplified best in the absurdly abortive cardgame fight that didn’t even make it to the end of the second turn before one was declaring the other to be a shocking demon of untold strength. I guess they were also dropping a few hints that the squeak toy is some kind of feral monster, and by hints, I meant a quick flash through of her enjoying fighting ending with a nightmarish monster that looks like her made of melting icecream, but for Japanese media, that’s subtle as hell. They basically slapped you across the face with the entire monkey paw angle though, and you know that’s not going to go anywhere for months at least, if not the very end of the show.

I’m fairly sure this is merely Okada trying to do Black Rock Shooter again, but this time with card games and without a budget. Or style. I have little patience these days for her drawn out and oblivious-to-excess ways when it comes to melodrama and I’m pretty sure this has already telegraphed exactly how the whole thing is going to go, so I’m not sure I actually need to watch it to find out. Without much else to keep me occupied, certainly not the animation or characters, I don’t see much reason to stick with it.

  • Kitsu says:

Everything is angst to you Aroduc.
It a baby cry you will say it was Aaaangst
    You overreacted to much

  • Sanjuro says:

At least it didn’t take anything from Gen’ei.

    • Aroduc says:

A murder, cadre of murdering magical girls, or a budget would have done it some good.

  • Flip Porter says:

Able to see what’s gonna happen from episode 1? What is this Lightning Returns?

  • Just from looking at your pictures, it reminds me of Angelic Layer.

    • Aroduc says:

      Angelic Layer had action.

And no ice cream monsters in ruined cities during death tetris.

  • Mesousa2877 says:

Why does the cast have to be girls? There’s been zero card game marketing anime that focus on girls.

This show really would have worked better if the cast were boys.

    • Sanjuro says:

It all depends on who the game is marketed to. If the cards all have fluffy little girls on, they’re probably for girls. Though lots of men would like it too.

  • anonnnn says:

    The Op is nice

  • anon says:

    MOTTO BATORU

  • The Phantom says:

I would give it a try if it were not s stupid card game show, sadly it is, and so it sucks, hard.

  • CTT says:

The “darkness” has only sucked me into watching more of bad shows than I should have since Madoka came out. I am not making that mistake a 12th time
