Prisma Illya #02 — The “Stand There and Wait” Plan of Attack

July 13th, 2013

Great work, Rider.

Impressions:

This didn’t get much better than last week. I believed in you, Silver Link. And to a lesser extent the parody-based offshoots of Type-Moon. And this is how you repay me? With an utterly generic magical girl show? And we are so proud of our joke that transforming is embarrassing that we required near flat out a gong for that ‘joke?’ I can’t even really compliment the fight much. For as decently animated as it was in parts, Rider spent about 75% of it standing around waiting, 15% charging up her ultimate attack, and 5% doing that ridiculous blur dodge thing. Unsurprisingly, her plan of holding still did not hold up against the counter plan of walking up and stabbing her in the chest with Gae Bulg. Perhaps we could have directed that scene to be a little more surprising or at least jarring instead of ridiculously drawn out, eh?

I’m just not seeing a whole lot of ways this could get much better right now unless they radically switch things or speed things up. The not-fight bits, ie most of the episode, are just boring while the fights aren’t particularly well choreographed or directed. For what’s ostensibly meant to be a parody, it’s also incredibly generic and cliché. It hasn’t even tried to do anything remotely interesting and it’s not doing a good job of treading ground that’s already very very well traveled. All it seems to have going for it is the Type-Moon label slapped on top. With two episodes down, the characters have done little to endear themselves while the humor and story are poorly and slowly delivered at best. Unless next week is a drastic step up, I’ll take either of the other transforming magical girl shows over this one. Well… assuming Fantasista doesn’t crap out on its second episode like so many other shows this season have already.

14 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

*repeats the complaint mantra again* :P

Slow buildup. Sloppy animation. Everything going according to keikaku. Kekeke…

Exposition dragged out 1-2 chapters worth of material to fill 20 minutes. The only thing that could be better was the Waver/Zelretch bit. They should have shown the destruction of Auditorium D, creating a new skylight to the basement and injuring 14 students while causing millions of pounds in damage and lost research. That would have been awesome.

FYI, almost everything is equally crap. Free! (willies) is probably the worst, mainly due to the hallucinations of the fanbase. Anyway, I will still continue to enjoy this as I already know how it ends, ie it doesn’t end but continues to Miyu’s Arc and Magical Shotas.

    • Aroduc says:

They could be doing all kinds of things to at least make it feel like there’s more going on. More humor, more action, less masturbatory exposition. But no.

      • Anonymous says:

So they should just pull shit out of nowhere that isn’t in the source material. Sure, why not.

        • jingoi says:

          Everybody else does it.

        • Aroduc says:

The issue is more doing it completely half heartedly. Of course, Japanese ‘adaptation’ most of the time means “start cutting the existing script until we get down to 20 minutes” instead of actually adapting for a new medium and then maybe adding something to half-ass an ending. I’ve never understood why the source in Japanese media and barely any other is treated like a bible instead of just a starting point anyway.

“I’ve never understood why the source in Japanese media and barely any other is treated like a bible instead of just a starting point anyway”

Because GONZO. And retarded fans of the original. And piss poor directors.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

*inserts complaint mantra again* (see prisma 1 posting)

insert non-canon material – the corebase complains
attempt to flesh out canon source material – everyone else complains.

As the complaint mantra says, there is no pleasing everyone. There are examples galore where people complain about either of these. And we all know why Tsukihime anime doesn’t exists…

        • Kadi says:

          Why doesn’t Tsukihime anime exist?

(Should I run and hide now?)

        • Anonymous says:

TSUKIHIME ANIME DOES EXIST. Seriously it was just such crap that most of us don’t want to remember it.

  • Anon says:

I begin to wonder, why the MA Girls in the most Anime. Have the same Cloths on. Do you are being poor and dont have other Parts? Was this cheaper if you buy them in mass discount? The Spectators are dump and wont regonize her, because they memorizes the Chest and Lower Body Parts?

  • algorithm says:

“I believed in you, Silver Link”

    Wait, what?

    • Tiresias says:

I wonder about that too. what have Silver Link done to deserve that trust anyway?

      • Afrosquirrel says:

Well, Green Link is an idiot, Red Link is incompetent, nobody listens to Blue Link, and Purple Link is a backstabbing traitor. So I guess that leaves saving Zelda to Silver Link by process of elimination.

  • OverMaster says:

“Unless next week is a drastic step up, I’ll take either of the other transforming magical girl shows over this one.”

What’s the point, you’ll only keep whining about those as well. Like you could do anything else.
