Ixion Saga DT #01 — Packing Heat
October 7th, 2012
There’s a lot more penises than expected.
FYI, Total Eclipse is ‘off’ this week while they air a special interviewing staff and cast. It’ll be back airing at its normal time next week.
Impressions:
The biggest fantasy that this show has is that anybody would turn all blushy and moronic over a female avatar in an MMO hitting on them. There’s at least a 125% chance it’s a guy. Well, at least the show’s not taking itself particularly seriously, although it’s a little hard to tell how seriously it’s supposd to be taken. Villain #1 has his men cut down a dozen of the princess’s guards, and then gets flattened by a rolling chair. Mixed messages here. Or upon being rescued, our hero hits on the seemingly-maid who turns out to be packing quite a bit, in more ways than one… and has the voice of Genghis Khan. And then they go shoe shopping. Because he was gaming in his socks. And he buys dragon booties. Which he later stabs into the groin of Villain #2.
I guess that the takeway message is that I do not understand what you are trying to do, Ixion Saga. I mean, you have your standard teenage gamer kid transported to a fantasy world, but there’s no harem waiting for him. Just one underaged princess and a bunch of men. He then wins his first fight by kicking his opponent in the junk with spiked shoes while he’s charging up to use his super attack, nicks his magic sword, and runs off. Sure, I laughed, and I’m fairly sure much of it was with the show instead of at it, opening aside, but I’m not sure how much of the comedy will stay funny now that the general surprise has worn off. A lot of it is pretty bad/corny slapstick with another one of those shouty protagonists. The other characters seem okayish, although have equally limited personality. Dour tank is boring as sin, but snarky princess and gun manmaid aren’t terrible. It’s not technically bad at all either although the fights certainly weren’t impressive.
I guess it gets another week then. If it ramps up the slapstick a bit more, it could be a nice kind of retro callback show to the timeof things like Slayers or Orphan. That’s probably asking way too much for a corny video game ‘adaptation’ though and both the characters and production will need to improve a bit now that I have a better idea of what to expect.
