Twin Thief Angels #02 — Hard Play
July 11th, 2011
Needs more hard. Less cheese.
Impressions:
I’m still not quite sure what to make of this show. It’s so close to being just bland magical girl nonsense, but then they have Haruka dreaming about Totally-Not-Misty-Knight sniffing her panties, the fake guy pulling a knife, and the teacher desperate enough to eat live floor lobster. At the same time, listening to Tamura Yukari with the school decorated by cherries everywhere makes me feel like I’m watching a magical girl spinoff of a certain sex comedy. ‘Milfeulle’ having a boytoy rambling about her engaging in ‘hard play’ with his omelettes isn’t helping much either. Three years of working on Galaxy Angel permanently ingrains certain things into your brain.
It needs to commit to something or it’ll just keep being watered down and distracted like this. Run with the weird comedy or run with the magic girl crap. I’d vastly prefer the former, and JC Staff’s main strength has always been comedy. This could be a fun parody, but right now, it’s unclear what it wants to be, if anything at all. They just sort of seem to be well aware that they’re making a magical girl show, but aren’t quite sure what to do about it. Like the little gameboy things and how they look identical to the transformation widgets. That was almost some kind of setup for… I don’t know… something… but then… nada.
And as I look back, I notice that once again, this is almost exactly what I said about Milky Holmes’s second episode too. Maybe that means that this show’s episode 3 will turn it around just like MH’s 3 did for it. Buuut, I don’t know that I’d count on that. Aside from occasionally flirting with weirdness, this has never been anywhere near as outrageous as any five seconds of Twenty.
Preview:
Manservice and cat ears.

Watching characters voiced by Rie Kugimiya and Yukari Tamura beaten half to death by bears would make one of the 50 greatest anime episodes of all time. I’m holding out hope that’s what we get.
