The Knights of Marronnier #01 — Mysterious Strangers

October 3rd, 2026

What a disguise.

Aaand I'm taking a break. I've had enough fantasy for the moment. I see you, Suikoden. I'll get to you after walking the animals. See you in an hour or two to take another whack at this.

Impressions:

I'd be harsher on this for being so unambitious and boring if the current state of fantasy anime wasn't… what it clearly is. There are knights. They're brothers. There's a princess. Who could this mysterious feminine 'duke' be who is attended to by the princess's maid and a mutual attraction to one of them. Oh, it's the princess. Astonishingly, the narrator that saw fit to explain that all the dudes who call the same woman mother are brothers vanished for the latter part of the episode and didn't see fit to explain that.

It's simply dull. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. There's no story. No conflict. The princess waves to them and they all cheer, because that's the most exciting thing going on in this pastoral kingdom. A meteor doesn't need to drop on them, but come on. Even sitcoms at minimum have some kind of novel occurrence for characters to react to in some way. The art style is a bit retro shoujo, but it's also borderline unanimated for the most part. It successfully exists. And that's kind of about it.
