Dreamland #01 — Oops, All Dead Parents
October 17th, 2026
Anime school bullies are so unoriginal.
See? I didn't forget this. I just took a while to remember. Also, it does 'air' rather late.
Impressions:
At least something this season has a budget, though it wears its aspirations on its sleeve. Or more specifically, its room. Yeah, I see that One Piece poster on the wall. Which unfortunately does mean that the writing is… not aiming very high. Which undermines a lot here. A better show would've had something more substantative than getting up the courage to face his fear, or whatever, not to mention built more towards it than "have you considered NOT being traumatized?" Especially since we're doing the awful fantasy world thing. Sure, more Little Nemo than Sword Art Online, but the well is thoroughly poisoned at this point, especially when you quite literally have "it was all just a dream" as the central conceit.
Anyway, I outright laughed at the school bully who picks exclusively on people with dead/comatose parents by mocking them for being sad about having… dead parents. But hey, if you're sad about it, have you tried… not being sad? You know, believing in yourself and trying your best? So says the peanut gallery of quirky goth girlfriend completely missing from the OP and friendly wandering school counselor who has no idea what was going on despite a dude yelling about it three seconds prior. Oh, thanks. I didn't need therapy. I needed to believe in myself. That gives me the ability to… uh… facetank the fire demon trauma and learn the very important exposition that Dreamland is a land. Of dreams. Wow! And it's a land! Lands are so big! This is the conversation that the episode ends on.
