The Elusive Samurai #14 — Words are Like Arrows
July 24th, 2026
They get vomited up, apparently.
Impressions:
Well, at least its visuals remain distinctively bizarre. The bulging eyes are old hat, but the knife tongue and firing arrows from the mouth are new. As far as metaphors for an interrogation, they aren't the worst. The issue is that rather than putting together any kind of clever back and forth, it's just handwavey super powers. He can detect lies with his super sight, unless he just can't. But what if we say he can detect lies EVEN MORE? Okay, and then a SECOND time? I would've liked to see Ayako have a more central role if this was meant to be her episode. Or maybe Tokiyuki needed to do more in the interrogation than just sit there and be immune to all the word arrows.
You can also tell that the animators animated what they wanted to animate, not what actually needed it. Idols dancing as an aside? Yep. The assasination attempt/fight at the end? Meh, have a bunch of stills. There were also a couple shots of random retainers wandering about which had way more frames than necessary. I would love to have an inner look at Cloverworks's process just to figure out what the hell is going on.
