Loser Ranger #20 — Flimsy Pretenses
June 1st, 2025
People in this world kind of deserve it at this point.
Impressions:
Better to be going too fast than dragging things out, Lazarus, but these last couple episodes have been a little too breakneck for my tastes, especially with the group putting up not even the slightest pretense before mass murdering everybody at the very first opportunity that they get. "We're not like the crazy cult that murdered everybody," they protest, three minutes before doing exactly that out of blind worship. Even the Joker would put up more of a facade before gassing the entire crowd. At the very least, they could've had an 'innocent' monster that the rangers were baited into torturing, or tricked them into killing some hapless bystander for the crowd to turn on them… which I had thought they already did in the previous timeskip last week before we did it again. They badly needed to show literally any monster, or at least a facade of one, not immediately trying to murder every single person in a three mile radius while cackling in unhinged glee for this premise to work at all. Or focus on the actually oppressed and tortured fighters, by both sides, instead.
Speaking of which, D going along with them feels completely wrong for his character. Didn't he have a whole thing where he realized that the monsters were just as bad, if not worse, than the rangers? Sure, his ego being worshipped as a fighter is fine, and they could've gone with an enemy of my enemy angle, but throwing in with the group that blindly worshipped them as he used to coming right off the arc where he rejects the monsters and starts to figure out things are somewhat nuanced, he should be more aware of the hypocrisy here, even before apparently taking a couple weeks off to… I guess just sit around and nobody notice nor care about most of Team Green going missing? Their kidnapping would've been a good cassus beli for a confrontation rather than Red ripping a guy's hand off in front of a dozen cameras the second they were supposedly turned off too.
