Loser Ranger #18 — Cosplay Party
May 18th, 2025
It's not been a great week for anime.
Impressions:
Better than the school arc at least, and certainly the current TBH episodes, but I'm getting pretty tired of the two minutes of the frog monsters every week as we wait for anybody to… you know… care about the swarm of giant amphibeans apparently roaming the countryside. I think they've probably eaten enough people at this point to at least make the evening news. D waffling over his newfound fee fees too. Being conflicted is good. Understanding that there's nuance and growing as a character is all well and dandy, even if he still succumbs to his rage from dumb jerks yelling "exterminate all monsters cause I'm such a super racist."
But what was missing from that scene was desperation, on both sides. Emotion. Drive. "Gee," a dude wonders, "I wonder if my friend is alive. Well, I'm just gonna sit here and announce what I'm doing." Then he gave up at the literal first bit of adversity. And D was never seriously threatened enough to become emotional in the first place. Same with the confrontation against Chidori. The moralizing speech explaining his hesitation was about not wanting to harm innocents, but he hesitated because he saw Chidori as a person, not about harming unrelated people. It feels like multiple script revisions were mixed up.
