Strongest Alchemist #01 — A Fetish for Popups
January 1st, 2025
Who hurt you, director.
Impressions:
The whole giant pig encounter really sold this episode. He tries all kinds of magic attacks and the pig just sits there, invulnerable to all of it. Not animated. Not even moving. Stuff just bounces off of it. But the sound team didn't get the memo, because they're playing pig noises like crazy while it's just… sitting there, patiently waiting for him to go through an entire page of internal narration about how nothing is working and he's doomed. Then, another one of the popups appears, saying that he used the skill of… Intuition… and now knows that he can… use alchemy in combat. To obliterate anything he touches. And so he does. Day is saved, and now it's just time to regenerate the lost legs of a spider that decided to be his friend that was wondering past. Oh, right, that happened too.
The unique selling point of this particular flavor of godawful cheat power is clearly a fetish for popups. What if nag windows were popping up constantly, but we loved them? What an exciting idea and premise, said nobody who has used the internet in the last thirty years. All the rest is the same as every other cheat power thing. A third of the episode spent explaining its premise; accidentally summoned and here's a cheat power as a participation award. Explanation and review and the cheat power and a zillion status screens to show that his numbers are totally going from 1 to 99 in no time flat. Defeats some local monster effortlessly without realizing how cheaty his cheat power is, to the acclaim of all. Just needs to save some demihuman girl from a racist slaver rapist and we'll have the whole complete schtick.
