Seven Spellblades #08 — Duelstravaganza

Plot? What plot?

Reminder, the cat show is off this week, though it looks like it'll air episode 8 on Wednesday on MBS and then 9 back on Friday again two days later. We'll see, I guess.

Impressions:

I've been dreading that this would be going all quidditch with the brooms and whatnot, but instead we're just doing some very silly dueling. No holds barred, no fancy rules! These are real duels! Except for the school rules. And audiences to explain people's powers before they use them. That way it's not just the same generic spells and attacks, but something totally different, because we had two entire minutes explaining how unique these people are to be followed by a five second non-fight. At least the later fight was actually a bit animated, even if it had way too much idiotic explaining how he fights dirty. By doing things like… kicking. And punching. These are 'dirty tricks'? Let's see some poison, or traps, or gouge an eye out. Give me a break here.

And here I had some hope for this new character. He at least seems like he has some exuberance, is the only person to call all these arrogant idiots arrogant, and no issues doing whatever the hell he wants while the main characters are… *checks notes* having tea and doing a review of sub-tertiary side characters who will probably vanish for another four episodes without ever serving any purpose. Are we supposed to care about these people? Are we even supposed to remember who most of them are? Given that we have to review them each time they show up, the answer really seems to be no.

Remember the first ep when it was all about how dangerous the school was and how tons of people died trying to level their powers? As is often the case with anime the setting was just window dressing.
