Love with Lv999 Yamada #01 — :3

April 1st, 2023

Leave some pastel backgrounds for the rest of the season, guys.

There's still one more Saturday show to go this morning, but I need to get the dogs out for a walk before the monsoons come, so it might be a bit.

Impressions:

A more multi-faceted kind of comedy. It has silly faces and extremely loud overreactions. It actually feels like it's been a season or two since there was a comedy that was largely "girl(s) make silly faces," although most of the faces here are just ":3". Which also seems kind of weird to me that the premise is a clearly outgoing and fashion-oriented social butterfly twenty-something who's completely inept in social situations. It's not like the sex-crazed Yamada of yore who was neurotic in her pursuit of getting laid. This girl's more designed to try to be both humorously awkward about literally everything, while also being the epitome of trendy college girl perfection; character traits that don't make much sense together which makes a lot of the jokes feel pretty forced since it bounces between the two at random.

If all you're looking for is just some marshmallow fluff, it's probably good enough. There's nothing that obnoxious or offensive about it, above and beyond the repeated yelling. It's not much of a romance either, not even to the level of that Gelato 5 thing from a few seasons back. Nor did its comedy ever make me chuckle at any point. She's pathologically awkward. He's a golem. She either tearfully begs him to go along with her, or rants at a computer screen. Either way, he barely reacts, making her make the ":3" face. There's not a high ceiling for that setup/punchline combination, no matter how many times it's repeated.
