Nier Automata v1.1a #07 — Completely Empty Dungeon

March 11th, 2023

That's one way to save on the budget.

Impressions:

This is nothing new, but it's always weird for me when shows lurch from excessively melodramatic to doing corny schtick. And this episode started with about five minutes straight of bad schtick. Not saying that it's impossible to mix comedy with tragedy, but there's a bit more to it than abruptly throwing pies, or in this case, robots throwing tantrums. Unfortunately, it was otherwise a very dull episode. That production disruption must've really done a number on the budget. Or maybe it's just normal A-1 animation slacking off after the first couple episodes.

Anyway, in many ways, it's kind of the inverse of the episode with the opera robot boss. They're given a quest to go to a dungeon, and… do that. Instead of skipping over some kind of crazy carnival and having a long boss fight, they slowly meander through a completely empty literal medieval castle to find a runaway 'sister,' and then find A2, spend about eight seconds fighting her before she simply turns and pisses off. What an exciting boss fight. And dungeon explore for that matter. They sure… watched that one guard fall over.

The A2 boss figth lasts maybe 30 seconds in the game. She has no interest in fighting her sibling models if her survival isn´t depandent on it and all Yorha units that she killed would wake up in a new body in space so I don´t think that she ever killed even one of them so far. The dialogue is almost one for one and she only returns in the 3rd act so people who had no idea about the stage play, all western fans, were left dumbstruck by her sudden hijacking of the later plot. Only files and optional conversations at the rebel camp explain who she is in a vacuum. That´s why ep 6 had to exist. Who knows if she can be left off screen for as long as the game did but I hope so.

New Popola & Devola units, the show uses them in ads and the OP, and Project Gestalt lore enter the 3rd act equally at random for people unfamiliar with Nier 1 so cour 2 needs a full flashback ep for them too. The game´s plots stands alone for a LONG while until it suddenly doesn´t and a key plot twist of 2 is given away in 1´s conclusion.

The comedy bit with the sister is based on a T shirt and she “plays” Yoko Taro here. Lol.

The puppet theater is adapting a joke ending for A2 but is talking about what seems to be Drakenguard. Huh.
