Handyman Saitou in Another World #01 — Minimal Upkeep

Oh no. My armor bolts.

This was a pre-air episode from a few days ago that I hadn't noticed. It starts airing on January 8th. Two more shows have pre-airs on the 24th. One is one of the many transexual shows this season, while the other is about a dude running a harem of schoolgirl spies. Aaah, the vastness of anime.

Impressions:

Ah, yes. The yin to the yang of "I was kicked from the party because they thought healing/logistics was stupid." Usually though, these things are about a dude being given the reins of the kingdom and implementing policies like "spend less money on racism and more on infrastructure." Mind you, of all the things these obnoxious shows do, there's yet to be a genuine Connecticut Yankee type thing where they legitimately Macgyver their way against all odds with cleverness, ingenuity, and basic physics. This is not that. Here, he does things like… notice that a bolt in a helmet is loose. So they have to make a super duper big deal out of… tapping it back in place? Or inventing a backpack? Which they all need to sit, watch, and then ooh and aah over his muggle genius.

This barely even rises to the level of Do It Yourself. Nor is it helped by sticking very hard to the manga source's presentation, which is a series of 1-2 page 'gags,' like a 4 panel deal, but taking slightly longer to get to them making a stupid face. Which results in the entire thing lurching from one random situation or even group of people to another without any cohesion, especially when the jokes are largely things like "he is in a bikini for no reason. No we won't explain it. That's what makes it a joke!" Thanks for explaining how you're not going to explain it. Or worse, the girl totally likes him, but won't admit it. That's not a gag to end a bit on, anime industry. These jokes, and especially the animation/presentation, are nowhere near good enough to sacrifice everything else. It just makes me think that that this was meant to be a series of shorts that couldn't get the proper timeslot.
