Akiba Maid War #12 — Hold Your Applause

No, please.

Impressions:

I'm not sure how I expected this to end, but I'm not totally surprised by this. Ranko apparently is indeed dead, though with Nagomi surviving a hailstorm of bullets and only apparently losing use of her legs, even that seems like it was pretty negotiable. And of course the ending is that she completely transformed all of Akiba with her optimism. After all, every single thing since the first episode has been everybody learning that Nagomi's naive innocence is always right and will always win over everybody no matter what. Apparently Ranko too for that matter. Ignore the casual spree killing and remember her solely for being martyr.

Which does make the first half a bit more inexplicable. She goes full angsty Punisher… and then just abruptly drops it the second anybody fights back. And doubly confusing because we're also getting an eleventh hour retcon of Ranko/Uzuko's mentor, who was apparently a mob boss herself, and like the hitman, supposedly was so changed by Ranko's goodness except oops, killed anyway. That feels like it probably should have been an entire arc, or at least an episode where she has some kind of epiphany rather than a weird 8 minute joke, but hey, still waiting for Zoya to have any point whatsoever. Oh, wait. Right. It's over. Well, better luck next time, Russia.

Anyone who claims that this ending is 100% satisfying and emotional is lying to you. The irony poisoning was so bad that it couldn’t even decide if any of this was meant to be intentionally sentimental or yet another nihilistic “joke”. Can’t imagine a worser show that I’ve watched all year (except for the “content” that was PriConne s2).
