The Witch From Mercury #06 — Powered By Dead Children

November 6th, 2022

Of course it is. It's a giant robot.

Apparently this is having the same production issues as Megaton Musashi and will be off next week with a recap episode. For six episodes. Where one episode was all meetings, and at least three were "You have to duel!" "But why!?" "…Anyway."

Impressions:

I suspect that a lot of hay will be made out of Suletta's mech apparently being powered by the souls of dead children, but this is a Sunrise mecha show. When are the mechs not powered by teenager suffering or eating their memories or turning them into immortal vampires? Especially after the very half-assed fight that was more cutting to the peanut gallery to explain things like "they're in space to give him an advantage" or "his mech is faster than hers, therefore he can move faster than she can." Super duper organic, and definitely a large part of what turns me off of mech action in general. Now here's a bunch of beams where she just flies in a straight line and all of them miss so we can cut away from that five second sequence to have thirty seconds of three different characters exclaim what elaborate evasive maneuvers she didn't actually do. And especially especially if she's going to win by just unleashing a random ass psychic wave out of nowhere.

The rest was largely the same complaints I had about last week's episode. They spend about fifteen minutes asking the question "Why do we have to fight?" and the answer is seemingly "Because our protagonist has literally no free will of her own." All she's capable of is helplessly mewling "I-I-I w-w-w-want things to be n-n-n-nicer!" I'm not even convinced they actually executed the fake pretty dude at the end either, particularly given Sunrise, Gundam, or mecha in general's long and stories history of bringing people back from the dead, in masks or just because they had a frying pan secreted on their person. Yes, I still remember you pulling that, Sunrise.

Still mad about the frying pan? Yeah… can’t blame you. I’m more mad about the fire proof cloak Tusk pulled out of his ass.
