Chains? Aw, Man #05 — Sex and Flashbacks

November 8th, 2022

Oh no, my house.

Impressions:

Not really addressing any of my issues with the previous episodes here either. The conniptions over anything vaguely sexual are bad enough without the over long seduction scene from the totally not evil manipulating woman. And then, out of nowhere, the tragic backstory flashback for the one dude who has still yet to do much of anything besides be comic relief. And for the second half, we introduce three new characters who I can't wait to see also sit on the sideline with all the other characters introduced so far. And what we definitely needed was another character to scream and have fits constantly. But sure, let's explain their powers too because clearly the story is moving way too fast.

I want to make comparisons to Vanishing Line for why that worked for me but this isn't. It began with four straight episodes, each focused on one of the main cast, but each one about them dealing with some monster preying on somebody. It was also highly fanservice/sex oriented, but Sword had swagger and was over the top in both his affection for chest sizes and 72 oz steaks, not constantly having seizures, Luke was the token angsty pretty boy, Gina was a femme fatale. They all had episodes showing off how badass and competent they were in the course of episodic stories of other people. And yes, Sophie sucked, but she was part of the story, not sitting on the sideline screaming. And there was a karate nun for absolutely no reason rather than multiple screaming idiots. Extra frames of animation does not make up the difference for me. But it's still a far damn cry for whatever the hell Ittoki is (not) trying to do.
