Reincarnated as a Sword #01 — Pop Up Spam

Remember when this was only for scam webpages and not the selling point of a show?

Impressions:

I weep for what fantasy anime has become. When this schlock first started getting under my skin, there were still only maybe six or seven throughout an entire episode. But this is where we're at now. Where an entire goddamned show is nothing but status screens and then tortuous explanation of the status screens. We sure are holding to the maxim of show don't tell. We're showing the status screens, and then telling you all about them. Lord knows it wasn't for the story or the plot, both of which are the same trite "reincarnated and saved a slave girl from rapists" nonsense as usual. Nor the animation for that matter. All hail our CGI sword savior.

The promos really hid all this too, with nary a stat to be found, but apparently that was all a lie, because here we are with all the horrid tropes that infest this garbage, right down to the objectification of a prepubescent slave girl. But don't worry, there's humor too. They sometimes find a moment to make stupid faces and/or scream in over the top reactions, but not too much. We wouldn't want to distract from the status screens. Someone do me a favor and count exactly how many of the damn things were in this episode, because I'm pretty certain at least a fifth of the episode was just looking at them.

I was pleasantly surprised by this episode, as I had tried to read the light novel and it was far more garbage and tedious!

The boring no-challege level-ups of the sword went on for pages and pages and pages in the light novel. At least here they got it over with in 20 minutes, even if it was deeply stupid.

The single worst element of light novels is the idea that a story about being handed unlimited power for free and then using it to one-shot anything you encounter is interesting.

At least the cat-girl displayed some courage and spunk before she was given a super powered sword, I suppose.
