Rumble Garandoll #02 — Silly Costumes

October 18th, 2021

The costumes are silly because we like silly things!

I have no real plan on catching up, but I will prioritize the two Monday mech shows, though both are on the bubble at the moment. There's about a half dozen things I want to at least glance through, though I'm unsure how many I'll post about yet. It may be a long blogging day.

Impressions:

This show's still not making a very good case for itself. The downer protagonist is a massive anchor around the whole thing's neck, but the glacial pacing is what ends up killing it. The end of the episode is actually kind of an interesting angle, about him faking motivation/passion and that being more depressing and demotivating than rejecting her, but it's only about three or four minutes in an episode that is otherwise a whole lot of dumb schtick and screaming. It would have been far more effective had he been faking it and manipulating her all along so there was an actual sense of betrayal, but we're stuck with his abysmal screaming true self that lacks all agency and is browbeaten into basically existing as part of the story at all, because he lacks the motivation for even basic survival.

And unfortunately, there's not anything else going on either. No fancy fights or B plots to marvel at the visuals or distract from the lack of character development or story progress. I suppose the 'humor' is at least not frequent enough to get obnoxious, since it is largely all shouting and overreactions still, but that's not a positive. The most you can say is that it dumps out a half-assed backstory for the girl about how she liked a show about Aquaman, but also, her home was destroyed. That's nowhere near enough to carry 15 entire minutes.
