Blue Period #01 — Holy Goats! Is That A… PAINTING!?
September 27th, 2021
I've never seen art before!
Yet another early pre-air. Actual broadcast begins on October 2nd. Season preview is done aside from the non-sequiturs, I just need to go back and rewrite things with each new pre-air. And pixel it up.
Impressions:
I think you can really sum up this show with the following (not verbatim) exchange from it:
Protagonist: "Art sucks. You make more money being a doctor. If you want to study art, might as well be a whore."
Random Teacher: "Oh, but did you know that there are prestigious art schools for the elite too?"
Protagonist: "…Oh damn. I had no idea. My bad. But who would want to do something they enjoy?"
Teacher: "Artists sell their paintings, and you're being an ass."
Protagonist: "(Oh damn. She got me good. Now I must art to see what the big deal is.)
I guess it made me chuckle at least, but this was not at all a comedy in any way, shape, or form, so that doesn't count as a plus. It's the same as all these school club things about random school club. Teenager with ennui, stumbles into club, rambles for five to ten minutes about how the sport/art/ham sandwich is the first thing that ever made them feel alive. Quite literally in this case. Apparently this is the first time he's seen a painting. Or drawn literally anything. I am skeptical of these assumptions we're meant to be making here.
It ain't a standout first episode would be the summation. It lacks the manic passion and excitement for the subject that something like GA Art Club had, or the humor and tight writing of something like Nodame. Hell, it doesn't even have the crazy-ass soap opera nonsense like amnesia or domestic abuse that a lot of these things have either. It's just a very generic high school club show, drama flavor, subject: painting. I can't even say that the writing is cornier than usual since being sucked into art world is the norm. Usually there's more exploding photoshop filters and cherry blossoms, but dropping into an ocean of wonder is a close second as far as bad cliches go.

A very good adaptation. Maybe the best anime of the year so far. Nice to see one of the most critically well received manga of the last 5 years being done right.
