Edens Zero #01 — FRIENDSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!

April 10th, 2021

I feel like a distress beacon might have been a better solution.

Seven down, two to go, but I need to go outside for a walk and to get some air. Only things left are pretty boy detectives and that silly melodrama about time traveling and crying constantly. Not in a huge hurry to get to either.

Impressions:

I hate to give Not-Fairy Tail any due, and it's probably because everything else today has been pretty dismal, but this could have certainly been a lot worse. Yeah, it did indulge in the usual bad Jump stuff, the groping of women, ranting from the peanut gallery to explain terminology of the super powers, over-exaggerated reaction as an attempt to be funny, and, of course, the screaming about friendship… at godawful length and volume. I guess we'll call it a success for being slightly better animated than Fairy Tail's first episode was, but that's hardly saying much. That was a show that frequently forgot to draw random pieces of the background art, like people's faces.

But it also had a complete story within the episode, complete with a Harry and the Hendersons twist at the end that they were doing it because they were dying of robot-itis and wanted to chase him off into space instead of being trapped on a dead world. Doesn't make a ton of sense, but it is at least an overture at genuine emotion. The bar feels a little low, but it's not something many other shows even bothered to attempt, let alone achieve. Still, I don't expect that to last, while I do expect the screaming and friendship-power things to go into full overdrive. I might stick around another episode or two just because if/when I cut Saturday shows down by uh, let's say six for now, next week I suspect this will still be in the top three or four. We'll see if I make it even that far though. There really is a lot of screaming.

Wait til lavos-kun comes into the story and see what game mashima been playing on his snes to give him inspiration for this.
