Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle #01 — An Argument For Insomnia

October 5th, 2020

Yawn.

Impressions:

I… suppose it's harmless enough, but I was pretty much done with its whole schtick at the halfway mark of the episode, and that's unfortunately where it decided that things were moving way too fast, so after two segment in the first ten minutes, stretched out the third segment for the entire rest of the episode. Haven't there been literally dozens of Looney Tunes things about Elmer Fudd or whoever trying to sleep while Buggs Bunny or Daffy Duck is being an obnoxious neighbor? I'm pretty sure there were more gags in Tick Tock Tuckered, the first Looney Tunes short that comes up on a Googling featured Daffy and Porky trying to get a good night's sleep in what appears to be a loveless marriage, about sleeping than there were in this entire episode.

The few it did have were pretty awful too for that matter. "I need something to cut up fabric." "Hello, it is I, the monster that drops scissors everywhere." "Can I have some scissors?" "Yes." "Yay!" I get that the banality and inoffensiveness of it is largely the point, but good god, can we at least try for some kind of comedic setup or delivery here? The one or two times it tried were always pretending she was being murderous when hunting for some fuzz or cloth or whatever. That barely qualifies as a side visual gag in furtherance of a real gag, but that seems to be where they're pinning all the humor on. So… it has a girl. She looks cute, I guess? Really seems like that's all it aspires towards, and it… sort of achieves that, I guess? Maybe?

5 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

I enjoyed it as its own thing, but like… what’s left for it to do? As a cute 30 minute special this is a super enjoyable watch but there’s no way there’s five hours of material to work with here.

  • The Phantom says:

I cant believe they stretched this lame plot for 20+ mins, and there is a whole season of the same over and over? Watching this is like torturing yourself.

  • Anonymous says:

I felt the same and its one of the main reason why I did not understand why so many seemed to like the manga.

  • Random Toxy says:

Well, least this made for a 6 page special for Komi-san
