We Hate You, Bumper Banchou’s Scripts

I never actually posted on the blog about translating this, did I?

MDKB Scripts and Tools

Like with Kamidori, I suspect that these tools will be useful to nobody because better ones have been created. They do possess some at least… odd aspects I could discuss though. Remember how Kamidori's scripts were split into machine code and a dump of strings? Well, here's the mess you get when they're put together.

That is not the format I worked with. I wrote a quick script to pull out just the strings. Also, somewhere in that giant mess is an ID for the character, which I managed to figure out and in the extraction process, associated it with the character name so I could actually see who each line was associated with.

But wait, it gets worse. See how there's two string outputs in that chunk above? One for each line? That couldn't be changed. And for when there was furigana, like Kamidori, there were extra text output functions for that. Instead, the script that put the translated text back in put everything on a single line and blanked out all lines afterward. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE. Since there's effectively no newline character/function, the final script had no linebreaks. Instead, it had spaces at the end of lines.

Fan-goddamned-tastic.

Next week, a double header of Seinarukana and Littlewitch Romanesque. I can't share the actual tools/scripts used for Seinarukana since they (mostly) belong to Xuse, or the tools provided by Monochroma for LWR, but I do have other more useful things that I can share (and Monochroma's format is fully totally completely disassembled by publicly available tools anyway), mostly having to do with handling how both of them like to use images for text and so have approximately THOUSANDS of text-as-image things each that needed scripting and templating to handle to forestall going insane.

2 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Dave says:

Have you played the TECH-GIAN demo? I always thought it was a prelude for a sequel since it included new characters, now it seems unlikely.

    • Aroduc says:

I haven’t. We weren’t able to track it down at the time, although I have seen the CGs from it.
