Cardfight Milky Holmes — Passive Aggressive Intracompany Squabbling

December 31st, 2018

Now to see if they carry on with this after the VA 'band' breaks up next month.

Impressions:

Ah, the end of December/start of January, when regular series are mostly either over or on a break for a week and the wild west descends with random OVAs, specials, and terrestrial broadcasts of Type-Moon movies. I felt like checking in with this one because despite both Cardfight Vanguard and Milky Holmes being Bushiroad properties, I got the distinct impression that this 'crossover' was forced upon the Milky Holmes crowd and they were not happy about it. For one, the other franchise just served the part of Random MacGuffin. For second, the (presumably) one crossover character they pulled out was almost comically poorly produced, in animation and voice acting. Not that this franchise is a bastion of high animation, but if you were trying to make a parody of a badly animated thing from the sixties, he wouldn't have been far off. For three, and probably most on the nose, it ended with a song and dance routine where the lyrics were mostly "Yay, yay, Milky Holmes." They missed a real opportunity here to go whole hog on that angle.

Otherwise, things remain pretty much the same in the Milky Holmesverse. Rather than the first season's lovable well-intentioned imbeciles, they remain an obnoxious shrieking conglomerate, succeeding in spite of everything they say or do, as every minor joke and gag that was funny once eight years ago is driven mercilessly into the ground until nothing remains but a splatter on the sidewalk.

I like that Milky Holmes is still making new content, however the idea that that may end because of a VA Band breaking up might just be the dumbest thing to come out of the series.

    And that’s saying alot.
