Planet With #12 — Sappy Speeches

September 23rd, 2018

Didn't expect much, didn't get much.

Impressions:

The writing continues to find ways to be impressively bad, even in the eleventh hour. The dragon sucks Souya into a flashback where supposedly, this was all part of the plan all along, and Souya was supposed to be the new genocidal apocalypse dragon. They've just completely given up any pretenses of the genocide being justified (not that they really tried in the first place), and yet, simultaneously continued on blithely with the redemption arc for it. He's just a teenager having a temper tantrum.

It's still a pretty boring episode though. Everything goes exactly to plan, except that there's a sacrifice of the main character, except all that was for was to deliver another sappy speech before they deus ex machina right out of it. Not even gracefully. There's an entire goddamned speech about how contrived and supposedly miraculous it is. Basically, twenty minutes of sappy speeches and weird declarations of contrivance. I still want to know why that one lady's hypnosis didn't work on the side chick. Was that supposed to be a joke about the glasses? Why did she even have hypnosis at all? It was used for jack squat except to note that it didn't work on one specific character.

Fall season preview should be up Tuesday morning.

Final Thoughts:

I suppose it wasn't awful, in a season that mostly was, but the writing was constantly problematic. It failed to make a case for most of the run as to why 'sealing' humanity was bad, demonstrating it as just people getting a little more mature, until it changed its mind and decided that sealing actually meant locking everyone up in dreamland forever. Why didn't we start there? Oh, right, because then its attempt to make every side seem like they have a point would be extra silly. And then there's the racist genocidal dragon that it really wanted to do a redemption arc for. Not buying it. Add onto that Souya's weird arc. The initial one was fine. Uninspired, but fine. Then he got into a funk, stopped caring about literally anything at all, including the dragon that he apparently hadn't actually beaten at all thus nullifying the closure of before, and had to be blackmailed into coming back… but that was inspirational blackmail, apparently.

An attempt was made, I guess. It mostly tried to keep action in the episodes and something happening week in and week out. With writing that was less full of holes and that actually developed the Both Sides thing and/or didn't want us to feel sorry for the dragon, it could've been solid. Alas, shed a tear for the Nazi dragon, would you please. He just needed a hug.

When Soya flew into the subspace hole, I thought “the lengthshow hat boy will go through to get away from Nozomi,” of course she just found him again anyway. That boy will never be able to cheat on her.

Also, I figured the hypnosis didn’t work on her because of her psychic ability.

Anyway, it was a pretty good show, something to look forward to on Sunday morning.

BTW, any thoughts on FLCL Alternative?

    Thanks.
